This is the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's fishing report for August 17, 2005. If there is a body of water you would like to see included in this report, please call or e-mail us with information on possible sources for that lake or river.

Fishing Tip: Summer thunderstorms can bring some fast fishing action if you can get to the lake before they hit. Fish will feed aggressively as the cloud cover rolls in and the barometer drops. Just be sure to get off the lake at the first sign of lightning.

CENTRAL ARKANSAS:

Lake Conway: Bates Field and Stream said the lake is clear and a little low. Bream fishing is good on worms, wax worms, crickets and TiniMite Bream Jigs fished next to the bank. Crappie fishing is good on minnows fished on the shady side of the cypress trees. Bass are good in the early mornings and late evenings on white or chartreuse buzzbaits and Zoom Horny Toads fished around the lily pads. Dark-colored plastic worms are also catching a few fish near the pads. Catfishing is fair on trotlines, yo-yos and jugs baited with cut shad.

Little Red River: Lindsey's Resort said the river is low with two generators running from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Trout fishing is good on wax worms and Power Bait. Crankbaits like Shad Raps, Countdowns and Rattlin' Rogues are taking a few good-quality trout when the water is running.

Greers Ferry: Tommy Cauley of Fish Finder Guide Service said the water level at Greers Ferry is at 454.94 feet and falling. The Corps of Engineers said by the end of August it will be down at least 8 feet and will continue to drop if we have no rain. The hybrid and white bass fishing continues to be good with the fish schooling all over the lake in the same areas as last week. The crappie and bream fishing is getting better with the cooler nights. The catfish continue biting all over the lake very well on just about anything you want to fish - soap, stink bait and bream being the best. The walleye have moved a little shallower and are biting about 28-feet deep now. Fishermen are having the best luck backtrolling leeches and nightcrawlers. The bass fishing is picking up. Carolina-rigged lizards and Texas-rigged ribbontail worms are working on sharp ledges dropping from the bank to 40-feet deep. The top-water action is picking up again and will continue to get better as the days and get shorter. Shiloh Marina said the hot weather has really put a damper on the fishing. Catfish are fair on live baitfish from 3 a.m. until dark. Walleye are biting fair on nightcrawlers.

Harris Brake Lake: Coffee Creek Landing said the lake is stained and low. Bream fishing is good from 2- to 4-feet deep on worms and crickets fished in the brush and stumps around the lake. Bass fishing is good on spinnerbaits and soft-plastics fished over the rocky points topping off at 10-feet deep. Catfishing is fair to good on chicken livers and nightcrawlers.

Lake Overcup: Lakeview Landing said the lake is low and the water is stained. Bream are biting well on worms and crickets in the weed lines of the coves. Crappie are biting fair, but are deep and going for minnows only. Catfish are fair on trotlines fished through the night.

Cadron Creek: Wooster Grocery said the water is low and murky. Bream are fair on crickets fished right at the surface in the shallows. Bass and crappie are fair on minnows fished 1-foot deep.

Beaverfork Lake: Wooster Grocery said the lake is low and clear. Bream are biting fair in less than 1 foot of water on crickets. Bass are fair on minnows in the same areas. All other species are slow.

Toad Suck Lock and Dam: Bates Field and Stream said crappie fishing is fair behind the jetties on minnows. Bass fishing is good early in the mornings on large stick baits and black Bandit crankbaits behind the jetties. Catfishing is fair on shad, trotline minnows and nightcrawlers.

Little Maumelle River: River Valley Bait said fishing has been slow for all species.

Big Maumelle Creek: Hatchet Jack's Sport Shop said catfishing is good on trotlines and stripers and white bass are doing well around the spillway. On Rebel Pop R's and live minnows.

Little Maumelle Creek: Bream are biting fair to good in the lily pad beds on red worms and crickets. Catfish are fair to good on limb lines and trotlines baited with live bream and minnows.

Lake Cargile: Beeson's Grocery said the lake is clear and low. Bream fishing is good on red wigglers and crickets. Crappie fishing is good on live minnows under a slip-cork rig. Bass fishing is fair at best.

Lake Maumelle: Jolly Roger's Marina said fishing is good for all species on the lake. The hot weather drove the largemouth bass to deeper water, but they seem to be moving back up to shallower water again. Early and late in the day, the bass are hanging in the weeds out to 15-feet deep. They are hitting top-water lures, crankbaits and spinnerbaits in the shallower water. Once the sun is high, they can be found in their summer pattern, hitting Carolina-rigged or drop-shotted soft-plastics and tube lures on the first drops to 20 feet of water. Kentucky bass are biting well and are holding in 20 to 25 feet of water. Fishermen chasing the Kentuckies are having the best luck with 3-inch pumpkin grubs, worms and tubes. White bass are schooling from the marina east to Three-fingers Cove, and some are being found around Jim's Island. Spooks, clear Near Nothings, Rooster Tails and CC Spoons are catching good numbers of white bass. Catfish are biting well on large minnows and prepared baits fished in 25 feet of water. A few crappie are being caught in 18 to 22 feet of water on 1/32-ounce jigs and crappie minnows. Bream fishermen are doing well on crickets and worms on any available structure. The larger bream are holding in 20 feet of water.

Arkansas River: Charley's Hidden Harbor near Oppelo said Lock 9 has a flow of 18,000 cubic feet per second with a headwater of 285.39 and a tailwater at 265.79. Catfishing in the main channel is excellent from dusk to dawn. Drift-fishing with live bream and shad has produced some monster flathead cats and some hefty blue cats around 20- to 45-feet deep. Stripers are excellent behind the power stations and below Locks 8 and 9. Use large spoons and live shad. Vertically jigged spoons at the jetty tips are also bringing in some good stripers up to 15 pounds. Huge schools of shad are showing up in the evenings on the sand bars and backwaters like Flagg Lake, Coppers Gap, Point Remove Creek and the Petit Jean River. The white bass are chasing them up in these areas for some great action on the surface. Try Spooks and poppers when they're on the surface and blade baits like Heddon Sonars when they move to the bottom. Black bass are in the shallows in the late evenings and are biting Spooks and Jitterbugs. Kentucky bass are mixed in with the schooling shad and are being caught on Tiny Torpedoes and shad-colored Bandit crankbaits. Bream are biting well in the grass edges. Crappie are biting live minnows fished under floating lights in the backwater areas.

Arkansas River (Little Rock area): Hatchet Jack's Sport Shop said stripers are biting well during low-light hours and on cloudy days. Chartreuse split tail grubs and Twistertails are catching the most fish below Murray Lock and Dam.

Tom's Lake: Shirley's Bait said the hot weather has kept the fishermen off the lake.

Bradford Lake: Shirley's Bait said everyone's avoiding the lake during the daytime.

White River: Shirley's Bait said the river clarity is fair. Catfishermen are the only ones out and are having fair success on goldfish and jumbo bass minnows.

Pickthorne Lake: Outdoor Super Store said the hot weather has kept fishermen off the lake for the last few weeks. Hatchet Jack's said bass are biting well on top-water stick baits and Flukes early and late in the day. Catfish are biting well in the channel and on the levee on chicken livers, nightcrawlers and catalpa worms.

Sunset Lake: Turbyfill's Outdoor Sports said the lake is clear and low. Bream and crappie fishing are poor. Bass fishing is fair to good in 4 to 6 feet of water on top-water lures in the early morning and late evening. Catfish are fair at night on trotlines baited with live bream or shad.

Saline River Access in Benton: Turbyfill's Outdoor Sports said the river is low and clear. Bream fishing is fair to good on crickets fished from the bank to the first drop off. Bass fishing is good on soft-plastics and top-water lures in 4 to 6 feet of water.

NORTH ARKANSAS:

White River: Gaston's White River Resort said the river has had some good wading opportunities in the mornings, but by mid-afternoon, the generation has the water rolling along pretty good. Fly-fishers are doing well in the low water on fox squirrel tail nymphs, small sow bugs and green and red midges. In the afternoons, large orange glow bugs are catching a few fish as well. Bait fishermen are doing well with red worms, nightcrawlers and a wax worm/Power Bait combo. McLellan's Fly Shop said at least one unit is running most mornings, gradually stepping up to six units by early afternoon. However, some days have seen a few hours of low water in the morning, with generators not coming online until 11 a.m. In the faster riffles and runs, drift a scud, sow bug, mayfly nymph or caddis pupa under a strike indicator. The catch-and-release area immediately below the dam has been fishing especially well lately. Terrestrials are also heating up the water, with the Club Sandwich, Nick's Hi-Viz Beetle and Rainy's Ant in black and cinnamon bringing in some good surface action. Wilderness Trail said fishing for trout on the White River has been good on Berkley Power Eggs in yellow and orange, Berkley Nuggets in orange and Belgian red worms. Buoyant Spoons, Rooster Tails and Little Cleos are the bait of choice during generation. Fly-fishermen are doing well on olive Woolly Buggers, Zebra Midges, soft hackles, olive scuds and sow bugs. Brown trout are being caught on Suspending Rogues, Flat Fish and nightcrawlers.

North Fork River: McLellan's Fly Shop said generation has been coming online around 2 p.m., providing plenty of wading opportunities. During low water, concentrate your nymph fishing on the faster runs and riffles. During high-water conditions, streamer fishing has been excellent from a boat (especially on overcast days). Many trout are being hooked on terrestrials - grasshoppers, ants and beetles - and it will only get better as summer continues.

Bull Shoals Lake: Wilderness Trail said the extreme heat throughout the day has pushed the lake temperature up to 89.7 degrees. The lake level is at 649.62 feet and the thermocline remains steady at 31 feet. Crappie have moved into the comfort layer of the thermocline and are holding in about 30 feet of water in the middle of the cuts, off the points and along the bluff walls on pole trees. Crappie minnows Bink's crappie spoons have worked well this week. Catfish are in the 20-foot range in the creeks and are biting on nightcrawlers, Magic Bait and chicken liver. The best time to fish has been from 7 p.m. to midnight. Largemouth bass are active in the morning up against the banks in the creeks. Zara Spooks, buzzbaits and chuggers will trigger some reaction strikes. There is an afternoon bite that started last week in the heat of the day. Largemouth are attacking spoons and Carolina-rigged finesse worms in 30 to 34 feet of water around points and deep brush piles. If you can stand the heat, you can get some bites. Smallmouth bass are a little deeper than the largemouths and are around chunk rock points and transition banks throughout the lake. Mojo-rigged centipedes, Brush Hogs or finesse worms in watermelon or cotton candy are working well. Tubes and spider jigs are working well in the mornings and late afternoons on smallies that have moved into the 24- to 28-foot range to feed. Work your baits slow because the smallies are not very aggressive. Kentucky bass are staying with the shad, making them hard to find. Spooning is the best technique along with a drop-shot rig with 4-inch finesse worms. Live-bait anglers are catching Kentuckies on a split shot and leech pulled under the shad. Walleye have been active this week with the best bite from 2 p.m. until dark. Crawler harnesses and leech harnesses on bottom bouncers, spooning vertically with white or silver spoons and trolling a blue Glass Shad on lead core are all working in 30 to 32 feet of water.

Lake Norfork: Cranfield Junction Quik Stop said the lake is at 544.48 feet and the water is clear. Bream are biting well in 15 to 20 feet of water on crickets fished around the brush piles. Crappie fishing is poor, but the fish are holding in 25 to 30 feet of water and a few have been tricked into biting a crappie minnow or two around the brush piles. Bass fishing is good at night on soft plastics and jigs fished from 5- to 25-feet deep. Catfishing is good on nightcrawlers in the evenings in water 16- to 20-feet deep.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS

Beaver Lake: Southtown Sporting Goods said the lake is at 1,111.4 feet and the water is clear. Bluegill are good on crickets near shallow brush and stumps. A few are being caught on spinnerbaits like the Booyah Moon Talker. During the day, fish deep-running crankbaits and finesse worms 10- to 20-feet deep. Catfishing is fair on trotlines and jugs baited with live shad.

Lake Fayetteville: Lake Fayetteville Boat Dock said the lake is at normal pool and the water clarity is normal. Bluegill are biting fair on crickets fished in 5 to 10 feet of water. Bass are biting fair in the mornings on crankbaits fished over 10 feet of water.

Lake Sequoyah: Lake Sequoyah Boat Dock said the lake is 2 feet below normal pool. Bream are biting well on crickets and worms. Crappie fishing is fair on jigs and minnows. Bass fishing has been good to excellent in 2 to 6 feet of water. A local tournament last weekend brought many 4- and 5-pound fish to the scales. The anglers were using buzzbaits in the mornings followed by spinnerbaits and soft-plastic worms once the sun came up.

Beaver Tailwaters: McLellan's Fly Shop said Generation has been coming on around noon most days, providing plenty of wading during the morning hours. Scuds, sow bugs and midge pupa patterns have been the most productive. Terrestrial patterns like the Club Sandwich, the Grand Hopper, Nick's Hi-Viz Beetle, and Chernobyl Ant are taking quite a few trout as well.

Kings River: Kings River Outfitters said the river is still low but the fishing is fantastic. Everyone going out is catching lots of bass. Soft plastics in just about any natural color will take some smallmouth bass right now. Top-water action is also at its peak. Sunfish can be taken on small lures and crickets. Catfish are biting nightcrawlers and live crayfish.

Buffalo River: Ozark Outfitters said the river is running low and has a stain to the water. Bream fishing is good on nightcrawlers fished 4- to 6-feet deep. Smallmouth bass are biting in the evenings on top-water lures and small buzzbaits like the Booyah Pond Magic Buzzbait. Catfish are biting well on chicken livers and nightcrawlers at night.

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Lake Hogue: AGFC Creel Surveys indicate the tilapia are growing well and being caught throughout the lake, but it is a matter of finding the fish. Fishermen report catching as many as 50 tilapia per boat one day and five fish the next. Almost all the tilapia caught have been in the ¾-pound range and up, and nearly all of them have been caught on red worms or nightcrawlers.

Johnson gold (cloudy days) or silver (sunny days) spoons with spilt-milk white grub trailers are also doing well. War Eagle spinnerbaits in firecracker, spot remover or blue herring colors are taking some nice fish in the grass lines and pads along Little River. Zoom Horny Toads are still taking a few good bass in back of the pad fields around 2- to 4-feet deep, on flats next to creek channel drops and swings, and along edges of Little River. Texas-rigged 10-inch Berkley Power Worms, Lizards and Brush Hogs in blue fleck, tequila sunrise, black emerald or black sapphire, are working next to stumps and the creek mouths dumping into Little River, around 9- to 12-feet deep. Swimming white jigs with pearl Zoom plastic chunks or spilt milk grubs on lead head jigs in 10 to 14 feet along the river are catching some keepers. Crappie are best on 1/8-ounce jigs with smoke or cotton candy grub trailers early in the morning in planted brush piles around 14- to 18-feet deep.
