The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Wildlife Resources
Division (WRD) recently named John W. Bowers as the new Game Management
Section Assistant Chief. He fills the position left vacant by Carroll
Allen, who retired in July. Bowers previously held the position of WRD
Game Management Special Projects Biologist.
“John will be a great asset to the operations of the Headquarters Office,”
says WRD Chief of Game Management Bill Fletcher. “His extensive work with
statewide projects and his ten years of experience with the agency will be
a tremendous benefit as we move ahead.”
Bowers will supervise programs that are statewide or multi-regional in
nature, including the Wildlife Management Area, Waterfowl and Forest
Management programs. He will coordinate sectional legislative efforts on
wildlife issues and the Federal Assistance in Wildlife Restoration
program. Other duties include drafting regulations and laws related to
wildlife and hunting, preparing impact statements and justifications for
legislators on wildlife issues as appropriate and supervising office
personnel.
Bowers began working for WRD in 1996 as a Wildlife Biologist and Sapelo
Island Manager. He most recently held the position of Special Projects
Biologist for the Game Management Section where he administered a variety
of statewide projects including developing, editing and publishing the
annual Hunting Seasons and Regulations booklet, the alligator and
late-season migratory bird brochures and the Georgia Deer Management Plan.
Bowers also managed the Quota Hunt program and assisted with numerous
research and survey projects. Additionally, he assisted with website
development projects, legislative and regulatory efforts and customer
service improvements. Bowers has a master’s degree in Wildlife Science
from Auburn University and lives in Conyers with his wife, Catherine, and
their son and twin daughters.
