MOURNING DOVES MANAGEMENT SEMINAR
8/9/2005
A seminar entitled "Management of Mourning Doves in Louisiana" will take
place on Aug. 20 at the Dean Lee Research Station in Alexandria from 8 a.m.
to 11:30 a.m. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will
join the LSU AgCenter and the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service
as sponsors at the event.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about dove management practices
from experienced biologists and enforcement personnel. The Dean Lee Research
Station also showcases how the proper management of many small grain
plantings and pasture grasses can have side benefits for attracting and
holding mourning doves.
Mike Olinde, biologist and program manager for LDWF, will talk about the
status of mourning doves in the state and management efforts to benefit the
species.
Barry Crain, area extension forester, and Roy Vidrine, resident coordinator,
both with the Dean Lee Research Station and Dr. Don Reed, associate
professor with the Idlewild Research Station, will give a presentation on
managing small grain plantings and native grass pastures to maximize their
attractiveness to doves.
Lt. Col. Keith LaCaze, LDWF Enforcement Division, and Special Agent Philip
Siragusa, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will speak about the legality of
planting and manipulating crops where dove hunting is involved.
John Pitre, wildlife biologist, and Scott Edwards, plant materials
specialist both with the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service will
give a presentation on the establishment and management of native grasses
for attracting and holding mourning doves and other species.
A $15 registration fee is required if the registration is received by Aug.
19. If a person does not register before Aug. 19, a $25 registration fee
will be collected on the day of the event. Lunch will be provided and is
