CATCHES OF THE WEEK

Rio Costilla: Brittney Richerson, 15 of Amarillo, caught and released several brown and cutthroat trout and one 18 ¾-inch rainbow trout. She was using a gray elk hair caddis.

Elephant Butte: Tyler Spahr, 11 of Albuquerque caught a 25-pound striped bass near the dam. He was trolling an umbrella rig.

Bear Canyon Reservoir: Louie Aguilar caught a 20-inch channel catfish. He was using chicken liver.

NORTHEAST AREA
 

CANJILON LAKES: Trout fishing this past week was fair-to-good for some but slow for others. A few limits were taken by anglers using power bait, corn and salmon eggs.

CHARETTE LAKES: Trout fishing was reported as good this past week by anglers using corn, worms, salmon eggs and power bait. Anglers fishing early and late in the day also did well using Pistol Petes and green wooly buggers. Most of the trout taken were in the 10-to-17 inch class.

CIMARRON RIVER: Water flow below Eagle Nest Lake as of Monday was 45cfs. Trout fishing was reported as fair by anglers using elk hair caddis, yellow sallys, bead head nymphs and worms.

CIMARRON GRAVEL PIT LAKES: We had no reports from anglers this week.

CLAYTON LAKE: The only decent reports we received this past week were from anglers fishing for trout. They did fairly well using worms, corn and salmon eggs. Fishing for all other species was slow.

COCHITI LAKE: Minnows, worms, poppers and small jigs worked well this past week for anglers fishing for crappie, white bass, bluegill and perch. Fishing was fair using stink bait, hot dogs and shrimp for catfish. A few good size black bass were taken on crank baits, clouser minnows, top water lures and lizards. We had no reports on other species. The water is quite murky.

CONCHAS LAKE: Crappie fishing picked up this past week for anglers using minnows and small jigs. They were fishing by the marina. Fishing for catfish was fair-to-good for anglers using shrimp and cut bait. Several white bass and smallmouth bass were caught by anglers fishing early and late in the day and using top water lures. A few bass were also taken on tubes and grubs. Anglers trolling bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs and deep diving crank baits picked up a few good size walleye. Fishing for bluegills was good using poppers, worms and small jigs.

COYOTE CREEK: Trout fishing was rated as fair for anglers using salmon eggs and small flies. The best reports came from anglers fishing the late evening hours. The water is low and clear.

EAGLE NEST LAKE: Fishing from the bank and from anchored boats was rated as slow for trout again this week but good for perch for anglers using worms. Kokanee fishing was fair with most of the fish being taken at depths of 21-to-30 feet. Anglers did best using spinners and spoons tipped with corn.

LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing at both lakes was fair this past week for anglers using blue and white power baits, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes, damsel flies, spinners and spoons.

MCALLISTER LAKE: Trout fishing was reported as slow-to-fair for anglers using prop flies, wooly buggers and salmon eggs.

MORPHY LAKE: Trout fishing was reported as good this past weekend for anglers using white power bait and marshmallows.   A few were also taken on prop flies and spoons. Due to road construction, access to the lake is limited to weekends between the hours of 8 a.m. on Friday and 8 p.m. on Sunday.

PECOS RIVER: As of Monday morning, water flow was 98cfs near the town of Pecos. Fishing was reported as fair-to-good for anglers using elk hair caddis, parachute adams, small copper john barrs, spinners, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

RED RIVER: Water flow near Questa was 46cfs as of Monday. Trout fishing was good for anglers using night crawlers, stimulators, bead head nymphs, salmon eggs, spinners and San Juan worms.

RIO GRANDE: As of Monday, water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge was 399cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA CRUZ: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using power bait, spinners and salmon eggs.

SHUREE PONDS: Trout fishing was reported as fair by anglers using spoons, prop flies, hoppers and bead head wooly buggers.

SPRINGER LAKE: Fishing was reported as slow this past week but a few good size catfish were taken on cut bait.

STORRIE LAKE: Fishing was slow.

STUBBLEFIELD: Fishing for catfish was fair for anglers using stink bait and cut bait. A few bass and walleye were taken on crank baits and spinner/worm rigs.

UTE LAKE: The Ute Lake marina has closed temporarily but the boat ramps are open and in good condition. Fishing for white bass was good for anglers using minnows, jigs and crank baits. Most of our reports this week came from anglers fishing the main lake. Fishing was fair using bottom bouncer/worm rigs, spinner/minnow combinations and deep running crank baits for walleye. Most of the fish were taken at depths of 15-to-40 feet. Fishing was good using worms and jigs for bluegill. A few good size black bass were taken by anglers using top water lures and bass assassins.

 

NORTHWEST AREA
 

ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing was generally slow for walleye, smallmouth bass and trout but some anglers found schools of perch suspended over humps and off points. Jigs and night crawlers were the best baits. You can catch these perch by using a small hook, worm and slip bobber and fish at depths of 10-to-15 feet over 20-to-30 feet of water. Fishing was fair using liver, stink bait and hot dogs for catfish.

BLUEWATER LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using marshmallows, power bait and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing at night was fair using shrimp, liver, hot dogs and night crawlers for catfish.

BURNS CANYON LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

CHAMA RIVER: Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 522cfs and 336cfs below Abiquiu. Fishing below El Vado was rated as fair for anglers using streamers, weighted wooly buggers, night crawlers and power bait for browns and rainbows. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

EL VADO LAKE: Trout fishing was reported as fair from boats trolling the upper end of the lake and using spinners and spoons tipped with corn and worms. Bank fishing was fairly slow but a few trout were taken on night crawlers and power bait.

FENTON LAKE: Fishing was slow.

HERON LAKE: Kokanee fishing improved a bit over the past weekend for anglers trolling Cripplures, sockeye slammers, double whammies, needlefish and Z Rays tipped with corn and trolling at depths of 28-to-35 feet. Anglers trolling for kokanee also picked up a few small lake trout. Fishing from the bank was slow with only a few trout taken on power bait and salmon eggs.

JEMEZ WATERS: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs was 20cfs. Fishing on the San Antonio, Rio Guadalupe and the Rio Las Vacas was rated as good by anglers using stimulators, hoppers, elk hair caddis and small bead head nymphs for trout.

MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week but fishing should be good as the lake was recently stocked.

NAVAJO LAKE: Kokanee continued to provide the best action for anglers fishing here this past week. They were using Arnies, kokanee killers, Z Rays and needlefish tipped with corn at depths of 35-to-45 feet. Fishing for small black bass was fair-to-good using top water lures, grubs, tubes and crank baits. Fishing was fair using worms under a bobber for bluegills. We had no reports on other species.

RAMAH LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species.

SAN GREGORIO:   Fishing is very slow.

SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday morning was 607cfs.     Trout fishing in the Quality Water section was reported as very good by anglers using sparkle worms, RS2s, red annelids, foam winged emergers, bead head pheasant tails, bead head wooly buggers and San Juan worms. Through the bait waters, anglers did very well using worms, spinners, jerk baits, salmon eggs, garlic cheese and night crawlers.

SEVEN SPRINGS BROOD POND:   This water is open to children under age 12.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA
 

BEAR CANYON: Fishing was slow for all species.

BILL EVANS LAKE:   We had no reports from anglers again this week.

CABALLO LAKE: Fishing was rated as slow again this past week with the exception of one group of anglers fishing for white bass. Last Thursday they brought in limits of white bass. They were using grubs, crank baits and top water lures. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE: Good-to-excellent fishing was reported by anglers fishing for catfish. They were working the north end of the lake and using shad, shrimp and liver. In addition to catching several channel cats, they reported catching several blue cats in the five-to-nine pound range. Fishing was slow for stripers but there were a few taken on umbrella rigs, top water lures and live bait. A few black bass were taken on top water lures and drop shot rigs. The bass were taken in 5-to-15 feet of water. Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill.

ESCONDIDA LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

GILA RIVER: Water on the main river was flowing at 39cfs as of Monday morning.    Fishing on the forks was rated as slow.

GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE ROBERTS: Fishing was slow but there were a few catfish taken on liver and dough bait.

PERCHA DAM: We had no reports from anglers this week.

QUEMADO LAKE: Trout fishing was slow.

RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte was 2,460cfs on Monday. We had no reports from anglers fishing below the Butte but there were several good reports from below Caballo. Anglers using grubs, night crawlers and cut bait reported catching several catfish and walleye.

SNOW LAKE: Trout fishing was slow.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA
 

BATAAN LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species.

BONITO LAKE: Fishing was slow-to-fair using power bait, salmon eggs and prop flies under a bubble for trout. The best reports came from anglers fishing the early morning hours.

BOSQUE REDONDO: We had no reports from anglers this week.

BRANTLEY: Fishing was slow for all species.

CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species.

GRINDSTONE: Fishing was fair for anglers using worms, power bait, salmon eggs and prop flies for trout.

LAKE VAN: We had no reports from anglers this week.

PECOS RIVER: Below Sumner Lake, water flow on Monday was 98cfs. Fishing was fair for anglers using worms, power bait and liver for trout and channel catfish.

PERCH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow as of Monday was 4.8cfs. Fishing was slow.

SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing was rated as fair-to-good for anglers using crank baits and clousers for black bass. Most of the fish were small but reported as very healthy. Fishing was good using poppers for bluegills. A few catfish were taken by anglers fishing the late evening hours and using liver, shrimp, hot dogs and night crawlers.

SUMNER LAKE: Fishing was fair using worms for bluegills. Fishing was good using bluegills on trotlines on the upper Pecos arm for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
