FWP Offers An Advanced Course For Women On Map And Compass Skills
Women interested in learning advanced navigating skills using a map and
compass are invited to attend a one-day clinic on Saturday, Oct. 1, 9 a.m.-
4:30 p.m. at the York Community Club, 20 miles from Helena. Participants
will do field work in the surrounding Big Belt Mountains.
Clinic participants will learn more about relating maps to the topography of
the land; triangulating to locate their position; maintaining course when
faced with obstacles such as lakes and cliffs; learning to use creeks and
trails to navigate back and benefit from practicing in a controlled
environment. A prerequisite for this clinic is the basic map and compass
course taught at the annual Becoming and Outdoors Woman workshop, or
equivalent skills.
The $25 course fee includes the use of a compass and continental breakfast,
sack lunch and a snack.
This clinic is an extension of the popular "Becoming an Outdoors-Woman"
(BOW) workshops sponsored by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. The workshops
are designed for women but are open to anyone 18 years of age and over.
