Thousands of visitors to the U.P. State Fair in Escanaba, including many first time anglers, will be eager to catch a fish at the Department of Natural Resources' Pocket Park. The DNR has stocked over 6,000 hybrid bluegills in the Pocket Park pond for catch and release fishing during the week of the U.P. State Fair, which takes place Aug. 16-21.

"There are always countless squeals of delight and many, many pictures taken of children holding up a fish during the fair," said Ann Wilson, UP Pocket Park coordinator. "Children take priority on the fishing line, where volunteers will be on hand to assist them to catch a fish from the pond. The volunteers can help the children put worms on hooks and ensure each fishing adventure is safe and, hopefully, successful."

The fishing pond at the DNR Pocket Park will be open throughout the week of the fair, from the time the gates open each morning until 8 p.m. There is no charge to visit the Pocket Park and enjoy any of the attractions offered there. Fishing rods and bait are provided by the DNR.

The DNR Pocket Park, which is located right inside the main gates to the fairgrounds, also features pellet gun and archery ranges, an authentic fire tower for the public to climb, native planting in specialty gardens and a constant line-up of displays and special programs, many featuring live animals and birds, throughout the week of the fair.

Volunteers are still needed to assist at the DNR Pocket Park. For more information, contact Ann Wilson at (906) 228-6561 or (906) 789-0714.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
