DEP to Begin Repairs to Kent Falls State Park

No Access to Falls During Construction

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced that work will begin August 8, 2005, at Kent Falls State Park in Kent, CT, to improve the trails and build a new stairway from the base to the top of the falls.

Work on the $1.1 million improvement project is expected to be complete by Memorial Day, 2006. While the reconstruction is underway, visitors will not be able to climb to the top of the falls. During this time, parking fees at Kent Falls State Park will be waived.

"Kent Falls is one of Connecticut’s most picturesque state parks with its cascading waterfalls and spectacular scenery," said DEP Commissioner, Gina McCarthy. "This reconstruction project will not only make the park safer for those who hike up the falls but will also make it more accessible to all of Connecticut’s citizens. We regret any inconvenience that the project will temporarily cause but it is an important investment in improving and preserving this impressive state park."

The project, performed by Real Life Land Improvements, will include reconstruction of the quarter mile trail adjacent to the falls. Repairs to this trail will allow for better access to the trail route, improved drainage, increased safety and ease of walking, and installation of more overlooks and resting places along the trail. An open area at the base of the falls will be developed with stone paving, allowing for better access for individuals with disabilities.
