On Saturday, July 9, in honor of Smokey Bear’s birthday, Brown County State Park nature center will host several activities illustrating the importance of fire safety in and around the home. Smokey Bear will be on hand throughout the day, as fire professionals conduct programs and kids play games and win prizes.

Firefighters will offer free fingerprinting for children, who can also attend a discussion on safety. An evening performance of McAxe and the Fire Crew (a firefighters’ program featuring sing-alongs and role-playing) will take place at the nature center’s outside amphitheater at 8 p.m..

An Indiana conservation officer will talk about the department’s canine unit, and the Indiana State Police also will offer a presentation. Other highlights will include speakers from Cinergy and park naturalists.

This event is offered free of charge, except for the regular park entrance fee ($4 per vehicle; $5 per out-of-state vehicle). Donations are always welcome.
