FWC APPROVES FEDERAL CONSISTENCY RULE FOR VERMILION SNAPPER

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) today approved a new rule to manage vermilion snapper in Florida waters. This rule is intended to be consistent with recently enacted regulations for vermilion snapper in Gulf of Mexico federal waters and with existing federal regulations in Atlantic Ocean waters.

The National Marine Fisheries Service has declared vermilion snapper to be over-fished, and the federal reef fish management plan includes measures to end over-fishing of vermilion snapper and rebuild the spawning stock in 10 years.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council recently approved new regulations for vermilion snapper, which are expected to reduce over-fishing by reducing the overall commercial and recreational harvest of vermilion snapper in the Gulf by 255 percent.

The FWC rule approved today raises the statewide recreational minimum size limit for vermilion snapper from 10 to 11 inches total length, which is consistent with the recreational minimum size limit for vermilion snapper in both Gulf and Atlantic federal waters.

The rule also increases the Gulf Coast commercial minimum size limit for vermilion snapper from 10 to 11 inches total length, which is consistent with new federal regulations in the Gulf. The existing 12-inch commercial minimum size limit for vermilion snapper in both state and federal waters on the Atlantic Coast remains unchanged.

There is currently a 10-fish daily recreational bag limit for vermilion snapper in state and federal waters on Florida’s Atlantic Coast. The new FWC rule now applies this 10 fish recreational limit on the Gulf Coast as well, which is consistent with the new Gulf federal vermilion snapper regulations.

In addition, the rule establishes a closed season to the commercial harvest of vermilion snapper in Gulf state waters from April 22 through May 31, which is consistent with the new Gulf federal regulations.

FWC’s vermilion snapper rule takes effect August 1.
