Florida’s Wildlife Legacy Initiative is a comprehensive planning effort aimed at securing a future for all of Florida’s native wildlife species. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is bringing the initiative to Tampa June 17 and 18, with an opportunity for the public to help shape the future of our state’s fish and wildlife conservation programs.

The goal of Florida’s Wildlife Legacy Initiative is to keep common species common and avert future declines of native wildlife. Public participation is a crucial element in developing the plan.

The FWC will host two events in support of the initiative at the Holiday Inn Express at 8310 Galbraith Rd. (I-75 Exit 270) in Tampa. A special workshop for scientific experts on June 17 will be followed on June 18 with an open house where the public and stakeholders are invited to meet with FWC staff and comment on the strategy. The technical meeting on June 17 will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The June 18 public meeting will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except during lunch, when it will be closed from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“The success of Florida’s Wildlife Legacy depends on partnerships throughout – from creating and implementing the conservation strategy to securing funding. I hope everyone who cares about the future of Florida’s fish and wildlife will get involved and help create a blueprint for managing our resources,” the FWC’s Wildlife Legacy Initiative Leader, Thomas Eason, said.

People who want to learn about the initiative or review and comment on the strategy can also view a recorded version of an online virtual workshop the FWC hosted June 9. Links to this recording and complete information about Florida’s Wildlife Legacy Initiative and congressional requirements for the Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy are available at MyFWC.com/wildlifelegacy.
