State and Counties Joining Forces to Conduct Summer Safety Patrols at Parks and Small Boat Harbors

HONOLULU — In an unprecedented effort, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), the State Deputy Sheriff Division and county police departments will join forces in a coordinated effort to curb illegal activities this summer at state parks and small boat harbors. These safety patrols will begin June 15 and continue through the Labor Day weekend.

“With the start of summer vacation, people are spending more time outdoors enjoying the beaches and parks and boating and fishing activities, and we want to ensure that they have a safe and pleasant time,” said Acting Governor James R. “Duke” Aiona, Jr. “For this reason, we’ll have an increased presence in areas where there have been problems with illegal activities, such as alcohol and drug use, unruly behavior, theft and vandalism.

“We want to send a message to those individuals who disregard rules meant to protect public health and safety,” he added. “Our state and county law enforcement officers will be out on patrol, and we’re taking this seriously.”

DLNR Chairperson Peter Young said this initiative is an example of leadership to address chronic problems of lawlessness in public facilities. “DLNR enforcement officers and county police will continue their duties, and now we’ll have additional help from deputy sheriffs to make this a safer summer for the public.”

Jim Propotnick, Department of Public Safety acting director, said: “The deputy sheriffs are glad to partner with DLNR and county police to help clean up illegal activities in our state parks and small boat harbors. By pooling our resources, these patrols will ensure sufficient personnel statewide to be an effective presence.”

To report problems at state parks and small boat harbors, the public can call the State Park Tip Line at (808) 586-1352 or call 911.
