Governor Murkowski Encourages Families to Go Fishing in June (Juneau) – Governor Frank H. Murkowski has proclaimed June 2005 as Kids Fishing Month and June 11, 2005 as Family Fishing Day. In honor of National Kids Fishing Month (June 2005) and National Fishing and Boating Week (June 4-12, 2005), Murkowski is asking all Alaskans to celebrate our fishery resources, their successful management, and the importance of fishing in Alaska. “Fishing is an integral part of Alaska’s heritage, tradition, and culture, and we should preserve and promote it as such,” said Governor Murkowski. “We need to teach Alaska’s youth to fish at an early age so as to guarantee a future generation of Alaska anglers that understands, appreciates, and respects our valuable fishery resources.” To encourage families to take advantage of Alaska’s wonderful fishing opportunities this month, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is partnering with federal, state, local, and private-sector entities to sponsor kids fishing events in many locations around the state. Events range from a kids-only king salmon fishery in Anchorage at the end of the month to Family Fishing Day at Twin Lakes in Juneau tomorrow, Saturday, June 11. “Alaskans are fortunate to live in a state with the most diverse recreational fishing opportunities in the world,” said ADF&G Commissioner McKie Campbell. “On behalf of the Governor and the Department, I want to encourage all Alaskans to participate in Family Fishing Day tomorrow and to spend some quality time with their kids fishing this month.” For more information on fishing events taking place in your community,
please contact your local ADF&G office. ###
