Change in Creel Limit for Alligator Gar

June 10, 2005

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries, announces an amendment to a current regulation changing the daily creel and possession limit of alligator gar from two to one per angler. The amended regulation (220-2.-35) was approved by Commissioner Barnett Lawley and became effective June 1, 2005.

This change has been made to further protect the alligator gar from excessive harvest. This species of fish has seen a population decline in Alabama since the early 1990s. The alligator gar is a popular sport fish and is native to the gulf coastal plain. “Gator” gar, as they are sometimes called, may live up to 50 years in Alabama waters.

Questions about the change in this amended regulation should be directed to the Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Office in Spanish Fort at 251-626-5153.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Parks, State Lands, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.
