U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Mountain-Prairie Region Announces Fisheries Employee of the Year

            The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that Timothy Schroeder, Maintenance Worker at Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery in Yankton, South Dakota, was named Fisheries Employee of the Year for 2004 for the Mountain-Prairie Region.

 

            The maintenance and construction program at Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery in 2004 was almost $2 million.  Projects included installing new water lines, replacing underground valves, repairing pond kettles and assembling tanks.  Schroeder was also instrumental in the successful construction of a new advanced rearing and broodstock holding facility for pallid sturgeon. 

 

            ?Tim was instrumental in the success of our maintenance and construction program last year, said Herb Bollig, Project Leader at Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery.  ?By doing this valuable work, Tim has contributed to the management, conservation, and restoration of the paddlefish and endangered pallid sturgeon.  This award is well deserved.?

 

            The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal Federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting and enhancing fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The Service manages the 95-million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System, which encompasses 545 national wildlife refuges, thousands of small wetlands and other special management areas. It also operates 69 national fish hatcheries, 64 fishery resources offices and 81 ecological services field stations. The agency enforces federal wildlife laws, administers the Endangered Species Act, manages migratory bird populations, restores nationally significant fisheries, conserves and restores wildlife habitat such as wetlands, and helps foreign and Native American tribal governments with their conservation efforts. It also oversees the Federal Assistance program, which distributes hundreds of millions of dollars in excise taxes on fishing and hunting equipment to state fish and wildlife agencies.
