AQUATIC HABITAT PROJECT UNDERWAY AT BOWLING LAKE IN LINCOLN - Tom Keith

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the City of Lincolns Park and Recreation Department have begun draining the water in Bowling Lake in preparation for rehabilitation of the lake, according to Jeff Jackson, the Commissions District V fisheries manager.

Jackson said the project will include fish renovation, excavation and deepening of the lake, improved angler access, repair and protection of shorelines, and possibly improvements to the boat launch. As a result of the project, there will be improved water quality, improved angler access, increased lake depth and diversity, an increase in the amount of aquatic vegetation and improved fishing.

The lake draining will be conducted over the next month and during this time anglers are strongly encouraged to harvest the fish they catch. Anglers are reminded they must still abide by statewide bag limits and hook and line restrictions. The main fish anglers can expect to catch are crappie, channel catfish and carp.

Funding for the Bowling Lake project is being provided by the Nebraska Aquatic Habitat Stamp, the Nebraska Environmental Trust Fund and an EPA 319 grant through the Department of Environmental Quality. The City of Lincoln is also participating with matching in- kind services.

The Bowling Lake aquatic rehabilitation project is similar in scope to other local projects currently being implemented at Holmes Park Lake and Yankee Hill Lake.
