Vessel Safety Zone at Delaware City

The Annual Escape from Fort Delaware Trialthlon will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2005 at 9:00 am in Delaware City involving contestants who will swim the 0.9 miles in the Delaware River from Pea Patch Island to Delaware City.

There will be a safety zone in the Delaware River which prohibits boaters from entering or exiting the area ¼ mile north and ¼ mile south of the Delaware City branch canal during the swimming event which will be patrolled by Fish & Wildlife Enforcement vessels and the US Coast Guard. The safety zone will be in effect from 8:30 am to 10:30 am on Saturday, June 18, 2005.

Boaters launching from Fort DuPont ramp will have to exit west into the branch canal and must be able to pass under the branch canal bridge which has an 8’ height restriction at high tide. East bound boaters in the branch canal will not be allowed to go past the boat ramp during the swim event. The boat ramp at Augustine Beach is open and only 3.5 miles south of Fort duPont on Route 9 with no restrictions.
