Fishing Event Planned For Persons With Disabilities

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game, the National Wild Turkey Federation, and the Shoshone County Sportsman's Association have scheduled a special event. Open to the public and especially designed for persons with disabilities, the event should be fun for people of all ages.

On Saturday, June 11, the three organizations will host a fishing event at Steamboat Pond on the Coeur d'Alene River near Enaville. A plentiful supply of rainbow trout has been planted in the pond for people to try to catch. From 9am until noon, personnel will be on hand to provide individual assistance and instruction to anyone who would like it.

Fishing rods and bait will be available for use by those in attendance. While a supply of equipment will be available for use, anyone with tackle of their own is encouraged to bring it along so there isn't a wait for equipment.

The event is just one of many fishing events to be held statewide on June 11 by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. June 11 is Free Fishing Day in Idaho, the one day of each year when a fishing license is not required. Other regulations including size and bag limits still apply. Current fishing rules pamphlets with specific details are available free from any license vendor.

The National Wild Turkey Federation is co-sponsoring the event as part of their "Wheelin' Sportsmen" Program. One of the NWTF's newest and most promising partnerships, Wheelin' Sportsmen gives disabled persons the chance to experience the outdoors. Whether it's for the first time or a reintroduction into outdoor activities, Wheelin' Sportsmen brings back the joy of the wild to those who are disabled.

To travel to Steamboat Pond, exit I-90 at the Kingston exit. Turn north and follow the river road approximately nine miles. The parking area for Steamboat Pond will be in your left along the river's edge. People are encouraged to come anytime during the 9 am -noon event.
