NOTICE OF INTENT TO PROHIBIT FRESHWATER COMMERCIAL NETTING IN POVERTY
POINT RESERVOIR PASSED BY L.W.F.C. 6/6/2005 The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries and Commission approved a notice of intent to ban commercial freshwater fish netting on Poverty Point Reservoir in Richland Parish at their June 2 meeting. Poverty Point Reservoir is under intensive management for production of trophy largemouth bass and is mainly used for recreational fishing. Largemouth bass and crappie are susceptible to capture and death in netting gear, and removal of commercial fishing nets is consistent with similar reservoirs. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will be able to allow commercial fishing gear if it becomes biologically necessary. Commercial fishing nets included in the notice are gill, trammel, hoop and wire nets, and fish seines. Public comments on this issue can be submitted to Bennie Fontenot, Administrator, Inland Fisheries Division, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, P.O. Box 98000, Baton Rouge, LA 70898-9000, prior to Aug. 4, 2005. For more information, contact Bennie Fontenot at 225-765-2330 or bfontenot@wlf.louisiana.gov
