DEP to Hold Second Public Information Meeting on SCORP

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold the second of three public information meetings on the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury.

The DEP is partnering with the University of Connecticut (UConn) Center for Population Research to prepare the 2005-2009 SCORP for submittal to the National Park Service this July. The SCORP is a planning document to assess both the supply and demand for outdoor recreation statewide and is required to be updated every five years. In order to be eligible to participate in the National Park Service’s Land and Water Conservation Fund Program, Connecticut is required to have an approved SCORP. If deemed eligible, Connecticut will receive federal funding for state and municipal recreational facilities.

Earlier this year, DEP and UConn conducted public surveys to gather input on the personal recreational experiences of users of state and local recreational facilities (i.e. state parks, forest, and boat ramps). As part of the recreational planning effort, DEP and UConn are seeking to gather public input on outdoor recreational needs as well as on the draft SCORP recommendations.

A brief summary of the findings of the SCORP survey will be presented followed by a public comment period.

If you have any questions regarding the development of SCORP, feel free to contact Fred Riese of the DEP at frederick.riese@po.state.ct.us or (860) 424-4110 or Donald Levy, Lead Researcher, UConn Center for Population Research at donald.levy@uconn.edu or (860) 486-9270.
