Events Planned for Free Fishing Day

Seven events for children and adults will be held around the state to celebrate Nevada’s annual Free Fishing Day on Saturday, June 11, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).

On Free Fishing Day, resident and nonresident anglers can fish on any public fishing water in the state without needing a fishing license or stamps. All other fishing regulations, including limits, will be applicable that day.

“Free Fishing Day is a great way for families to spend a day fishing. It’s a way to enjoy the outdoors and introduce youngsters to a type of recreation that they can enjoy for a lifetime,” said Ivy Santee, NDOW angler education coordinator.

Most of the events that will be held this year are noncompetitive with gifts being given to children and drawings being held for prizes. A limited number of loaner rods and reels will be available at the event sites for youngsters and adults who do not have their own.

Las Vegas youngsters can participate in a derby that will be held at Sunset Park from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Prizes will be awarded to children who participate in the event. NDOW will hold a free fishing clinic to teach youngsters and adults the basics of fishing beginning at 9 a.m. Information on the event may be obtained by calling NDOW’s Las Vegas office at (702) 486-5127, ext. 3504.

The annual children’s derby at Echo Canyon State Park east of Pioche will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Every child will receive a free rod and reel or tackle box, while supplies last. Prizes will be awarded. A barbecue luncheon will follow the derby with a charge of $3 per person. Information may be obtained by calling the Nevada Division of State Parks at (775) 728-4467.

Rainbow trout are being stocked by NDOW prior to the annual “Take a Kid Fishing” event that is being held on Free Fishing Day at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. Sponsored by Raley’s, the event will feature gifts and prizes for children who participate. There also will be a free lunch for children who participate. Participants may register at Raley’s stores in the Reno area. For information call NDOW’s Reno office at (775) 688-1500.

Sparks Marina in Sparks will be the site of a children’s derby that is being sponsored by the Sparks Rotary Club and will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Children will be provided with gifts and prizes and food will be served. For information, call Sparks Recreation Department at (775) 353-2385.

A carp fishing tournament for children and their parents will be held at Chimney Reservoir near Winnemucca from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Information about the event can be obtained by calling NDOW’s office in Winnemucca at (775) 623-6505.
