CATCHES OF THE WEEK

Navajo Lake: Jeremy Grafman of Albuquerque caught a 38-inch, 11-pound northern pike May 25. He was fishing for crappie using 4-pound test line and a 1/16-ounce spinner.

Heron Lake: On May 29, Mike Bird of Albuquerque caught a 31-inch lake trout. He was trolling a pink and white squid in 80 feet of water.

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.


NORTHEAST AREA
 

CHARETTE LAKES: Fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, prop flies and salmon eggs for trout.

CIMARRON RIVER: Water flow near Cimarron as of Monday was 70cfs. In the canyon area, fishing was fair-to-good using stimulators, copper john barrs and spinners for trout.

CIMARRON GRAVEL PIT LAKES: Fishing was good using power bait, worms and corn for trout.

CLAYTON LAKE: Trout fishing was reported as very good over the past week. Several limits were taken by anglers using corn, power bait, wooly buggers, prop flies, spinners and worms. We had no reports on other species.

COCHITI LAKE: The water is quite murky and the lake level continues to rise. Anglers fishing from boats are advised to use extreme caution due to floating debris.

CONCHAS LAKE: Smallmouth bass fishing was reported as awesome by anglers using assorted plastics, top water lures, crank baits and wooly buggers. Walleye fishing was good for anglers using grubs, sassy shad, wally divers and spinner/worm rigs. Fishing for catfish was very good for anglers using shrimp and liver on trotlines. Fishing was good using worms and small jigs for bluegill.

COYOTE CREEK: Trout fishing was good for anglers using corn, salmon eggs, power bait, worms and spinners.

EAGLE NEST LAKE: Lots of perch and a few rainbows and kokanee were caught by anglers again this past week. The perch were taken on worms fished from the bank and from boats. Most of the trout and kokanee were taken on power bait.  

LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE: Fishing improved at both lakes this past week. Anglers did well at Lake Maloya using mosquitoes, black gnats, power bait and home made dough for trout. Fishing at Lake Alice was rated as fair using power bait for trout.

MAXWELL LAKES: There were no reports from anglers this week.

MCALLISTER LAKE: Trout fishing was good for anglers using power bait, corn, salmon eggs, spoons and spinners.

MORPHY LAKE: Fishing was rated as good for anglers using prop flies and green wooly buggers for trout. Fishing with bait was slow.

PECOS RIVER: As of Monday morning, water flow was 700cfs near the town of Pecos. Fishing was slow with the high water conditions.

RED RIVER: Water flow near Questa was 409cfs as of Monday. Fishing was slow.

RIO GRANDE: As of Monday, water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge was 4,980cfs and fishing was slow for all species.

SANTA CRUZ: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using prop flies, spoons and salmon eggs.

SPRINGER LAKE: Fishing for catfish was fair for anglers using shrimp and liver. A few northern pike were taken on spoons, spinner baits and crank baits.

STORRIE LAKE: Trout fishing was reported as fair-to-good by anglers using power bait, worms and salmon eggs. A few were also taken on spinners.

STUBBLEFIELD: Fishing was good using liver, night crawlers and stink bait for catfish. Anglers using night crawlers also caught a few walleye. We had no reports on other species.

UTE LAKE: The Ute Lake marina has closed temporarily but the boat ramps are open and in good condition. Fishing was very good for some but slow for others. The best reports came from anglers trolling and jigging along the tree lines for walleye and crappie. There were several limits of walleye taken. Black bass fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using lizards, tubes and senkos in the shallow water. A few were also taken on top water lures. Fishing was fair using shrimp, liver and dough bait for catfish.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE: The lake level is rising fast and the water is off color. Fishing for catfish was fair-to-good for anglers using shrimp and chicken liver. Fishing for walleye was good for anglers using sassy shad and jigs tipped with night crawlers. The best reports came from anglers fishing the shallow waters around the upper islands.

BLUEWATER LAKE: Fishing from the bank was good for anglers using shrimp, liver and night crawlers for catfish. Trout fishing was best for anglers trolling spinner/corn and spinner/worm combinations.

BURNS CANYON LAKE: Fishing was good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, spoons and prop flies for rainbow trout.

CHAMA RIVER: Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 246cfs and 1,780cfs below Abiquiu. Fishing below El Vado was fair for anglers using night crawlers, bead head wooly buggers and power bait for trout.

EL VADO LAKE: The water level rose 33 feet over the past week. Fishing is good using corn and worms for carp. Anglers trolling spinners and Rapalas caught a mix of brown and rainbow trout. The fish were scattered.

FENTON LAKE: Trout fishing was good for anglers using corn, power bait, salmon eggs, Kastmasters, prop flies and spinners. The fish ranged in size from 10-to-12 inches.

HERON LAKE: The water level continues to rise and both boat ramps are open. Trout fishing was fair for anglers fishing from the bank near the dam and in the Ridge Rock area.   They were using worms and power bait. Kokanee fishing really turned on over the past week as several limits were taken. Anglers were trolling in 4-to-15 feet of water. Best baits were orange double whammies, red Cripplures and Panther Martins tipped with corn. Several small lake trout were taken by anglers using jigs tipped with cut bait and trolling large spinners. Most of the lakers were caught in less than 25 feet of water.

JEMEZ WATERS: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs was 244cfs. Fishing was good for anglers using stone fly imitations, stimulators, copper john barrs, spinners, salmon eggs and worms for trout. We received good reports from Clear Creek, the Cebolla, San Antonio, Rio Las Vacas and the East Fork.

MANZANO LAKE: Fishing was good for anglers using prop flies, salmon eggs, corn, power bait and cheese for trout.

MCGAFFEY LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

NAVAJO LAKE: Our best reports this week came from anglers fishing for black bass, crappie and northern pike. Lots of smallmouth and a few good size largemouth bass were taken by anglers using tubes, baby brush hawgs, top water lures and crank baits. Crappie fishing was good up the Pine arm and in La Jara Canyon. Small jigs were the best baits. Anglers using spinners, crank baits and top water lures reported catching several northern pike at north end of the lake. Fishing was fair using worms and small jigs for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

RAMAH LAKE: Fishing was fair for anglers using worms, spinners, prop flies, bead head wooly buggers, tubes and worms for bass and a few trout.

SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday morning was 4,910cfs. Fishing was good from boats and fair for anglers fishing from the bank or in waders. In the Quality Water section, trout were taken on red larva, egg patterns, leeches and San Juan worms. Through the bait waters, anglers did best with spinners, bead head wooly buggers, jerk baits and night crawlers. With the high flows, anglers should use extreme caution. The flow will be at or near 5,000cfs until June 15 th .

SEVEN SPRINGS BROOD POND: This water is open to children under age 12. Fishing was good for the youngsters using power bait, salmon eggs and fly and bubble combinations.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA


BEAR CANYON: We had no reports from anglers this week but the lake was recently stocked with good size channel catfish.

BILL EVANS LAKES: We had some good reports again this past week from anglers fishing for bluegill. They were using worms, small plastics and bead head wooly buggers with crystal flash. There were a few small black bass taken on plastics and wooly buggers. We had no reports on other species.

CABALLO LAKE: White bass fishing was good from boats as well as from the bank. Anglers fishing from the bank near the dam caught several white bass. They were using sassy shad, grubs, tubes and crank baits. Anglers fishing from boats did well trolling crank baits and drifting spinner/night crawler rigs for a mixed bag of white bass and walleye. A few walleye were also taken on sassy shad and curly tail grubs. A few catfish were taken on shrimp and liver.

ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing for catfish was quite good at the upper end of the lake. Anglers were baiting trotlines with shrimp, liver and cut bait. There were also several catfish taken by anglers fishing from the bank above Long Point. Most of the bass taken over the past weekend were caught by anglers fishing early and late in the day. Stripers were taken on umbrella rigs, live bait, top water lures and large crank baits. White bass were caught on sassy shad, spinners, live bait, crank baits and curly tail grubs. A few black bass were taken on tubes, crank baits, top water lures and spinner baits.

ESCONDIDA LAKE: Fishing was fair using shrimp, liver and worms for catfish.

GILA RIVER: Water on the main river was flowing at 169cfs as of Monday morning.    We had no reports from anglers again this week.

GLENWOOD POND: Fishing was good using power bait for trout.

LAKE ROBERTS: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, spinners and wooly buggers.

PERCHA DAM: Fishing was slow for all species.

QUEMADO LAKE: Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using spinners, power bait and worms for trout.

RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte was 2,160cfs on Monday. Fishing here and below Caballo was good for some anglers and fair for others. Several white bass and walleye were taken below Caballo. Anglers were using minnows, sassy shad and curly tail grubs. These same baits worked well for anglers fishing the river below Elephant Butte. They reported catching several good size walleye.

SNOW LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA
 

BATAAN LAKE: We had no reports from anglers but the lake was recently stocked with good size channel catfish.

BONITO LAKE: Fishing was fair using power bait, salmon eggs, spinners, prop flies under a bubble and small spoons for trout. A few carp were taken on dough bait.

BOSQUE REDONDO: We had no reports from anglers this week.

BOTTOMLESS LAKES: Fishing was slow.

BRANTLEY: Fishing remains slow for all species.

CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species.

GRINDSTONE: Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, worms, prop flies and spinners for trout.

LAKE VAN: There were no reports from anglers this week.

PECOS: Below Sumner Lake, water flow on Monday was 1,490cfs. The campground access was closed to anglers due to the high water release.

PERCH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow as of Monday was 28cfs. Fishing was slow but there were a few trout taken on bead head nymphs.

SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing in the upper river channel was good for anglers using shrimp, liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using tubes, lizards and salt craws for smallmouth bass. A few were also taken on top water lures. We had no reports on other species.

SUMNER LAKE: Walleye fishing was fair for anglers using crank baits, sassy shad and spinner/night crawler rigs for walleye. There were no reports on other species.
