National Fishing and Boating Week 2005

JACKSON - Each year to promote fishing and recognize National Fishing and Boating Week, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) allows persons to fish at state fishing lakes and state parks without requiring the purchase of daily fishing permits.

This year National Fishing and Boating Week will run from June 4-12. Daily fishing permits are not required on the following days: Saturday June 4, Sunday June 5, Saturday June 11, and Sunday June 12. A statewide fishing license is required to fish on these days.

July 4, 2005 is designated as a statewide free fishing day when fishing licenses are not required to fish, but daily fishing permits are required on this day at state fishing lakes and state parks.

"Boating is synonymous with the Fourth of July in many parts of Mississippi, and fishing should be as well," Fisheries Chief Ron Garavelli said.

The Department would like to remind everyone to take every safety precaution while boating. Here are a few simple rules to follow in making this boating season a safe one:

1. Do not drink and operate a boat or personal watercraft.
2. Make sure that approved floatation devices are available for each passenger.
3. Do not exceed boat passenger occupancy limits.
4. Keep an eye out for bad weather.
5. Respect others on the water and on the shore.
