This is the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's fishing report for May 2, 2005. If there is a body of water you would like to see included in this report, please call or e-mail us with information on possible sources for that lake or river.

Fishing Tip: Terrestrial patterns such as ants, hoppers and crickets are deadly trout lures on hot, sunny days. Cast them into pools and slower water underneath overhands or near grassy banks. Let them splash when they hit, just like an insect that has fallen into the water.

CENTRAL ARKANSAS: Lake Conway: Bates Field and Stream said the lake is clear, and the bream are still on the beds. Anglers are having good success off the bank using wax worms, crickets, red wigglers and black-and-brown Tiny Mite jigs. Many crappie are being caught on chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows. Bass are biting well on buzzbaits early in the morning and Zoom soft-plastics fished around the stumps. If you're looking for some real excitement, try fishing a Zoom Horny Toad in the lily pads at sunrise. Catfish are being taken on trotlines baited with minnows and live bream.

Little Red River: Lindsey's Resort said water clarity is good and the river is low. One or two generators are running during the mid-day hours. Trout fishing is good with many being taken on wax worms with marshmallows and Power Bait. Corn and nightcrawlers are also producing a few good rainbows. Fly-fishing has been good in the Greers Ferry Tailwaters during hours of low generation.

Greers Ferry: Shiloh Marina said the water is steady at 461 feet and is very clear. Night-time crappie fishing is picking up around 12-feet deep on minnows fished underneath lights. Walleye are coming from 25-feet deep on nightcrawlers fished on slip-sinker rigs. Tommy Cauley of Fish Finder Guide Service said the water level at Greers Ferry is at 461.10. Some bass are schooling as are the whites and hybrids. Both are scattered around the lake. The bass that are not following the shad schools around can be caught on top-water lures like buzzbaits and frogs early. As the sun rises, the fish will be on deeper points, humps and ledges anywhere from 15 to 25 feet on Texas-rigged worms, Carolina rigs and drop-shot rigs. The crappie fishing is good in brush piles around 20- to 25-feet deep. The bream action is good 6- to 15-feet deep on crickets. The walleye action is fair to good back trolling bottom bouncers with nightcrawlers on flats in about 28-32 feet of water. Hybrid fishing is excellent at night and early morning with spotty schooling activity during the day.

Harris Brake Lake: Coffee Creek Landing said the water in Harris Brake is clear. Bream are biting well close to the bank on crickets and red wigglers. Bass are holding close to the bank, but a few are being caught in the weed beds on soft plastics. Catfishing is good on blood bait and Catfish Charlie.

Lake Overcup: Lakeview Landing said the lake is clearing up and bream are biting well on worms and crickets. Catfishing is fair on trotlines. Bass are hitting white spinner baits in the shallows. Crappie are biting well on pink jigs tipped with shiners drifted in the deep section of the lake.

Toad Suck Lock and Dam: Bates Field and Stream said few reports came in, but crappie are fair in the backwaters in 3 to 8 feet. Try live minnows on a slip-cork rig. Catfishing is good on shad.

Little Maumelle River: River Valley Bait said the river is at normal level and visibility is good. Bream are hitting wax worms and red wigglers in 1 to 2 feet of water at the edge of the bank. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs in brush piles out to 15-feet deep. Catfishermen are catching some good fish on anything fished on the bottom. Bass fishing is good with spinner baits fished from the shallows out to 3 feet of water. Hatchet Jacks Sport Shop said fishing was poor last week, but a few bass were caught in the early morning on buzzbaits and spinner baits and a few catfish were hooked on limb lines baited with rice slicks.

Lake Cargile: Beeson's Grocery said crappie, bass and catfish are all excellent.

Lake Maumelle: Jolly Roger's Marina said fishing is good, despite the weather. Early and late in the day, black bass are located among the weeds to 10 feet deep and are hitting top-water lures and crankbaits. Once the sun comes up, try a Carolina-rigged lizard or Brush Hog on the first drop to deeper water. Kentucky bass are being caught 8- to 14-feet deep on 3" pumpkin grubs and crankbaits. Drop-shotting is also taking quite a few. White bass are schooling from the marina east to Three-Fingers Cove. Spooks, Near Nuthings, Rooster tails, CC Spoons, and Rogues with orange belles are all producing. Catfish are hitting large minnows and prepared baits in 20 to 28 feet of water. Crappie are in 18 to 22 feet of water and are being caught on small 1/32-ounce jigs and crappie minnows. Reports on bream are very good and picking up. Bream will be bedding up with the full moon and are on humps about 9-feet deep.

Catfishermen are doing good drifting whole shad in 10 to 15 feet of water around the jetties. Bass fishing is picking up on buzzbaits and Jitterbugs early and Spooks and Tiny Torpedoes as the morning progresses. Once the sun is up, chartreuse spinner baits are catching a few keepers until about 10 a.m. White bass are schooling right before daylight and around dusk. Johnson spoons and Storm Wide-Eye Shad are catching a few of the whites. Bream are holding in the grass line and are being taken on crickets. Crappie are fair on minnows in 8 feet of water. Hawg Traps in shad colors are catching a few stripers around the jetty tips.

Arkansas River (Little Rock area): Hatchet Jack's Sport Shop said the rain caused many fishermen to stay inside last weekend, but a few stripers have been taken on live shad and Twistertails. Catfishing has been steady on baitfish, skipjacks and slicks.

Bradford Lake: Shirley's Bait said the lake is low and the clarity is fair. Some nice redear sunfish are being caught on the beds on red worms and crickets fished near the bottom in 2 to 3 feet of water. Crappie fishing is good 3- to 4-feet deep on minnows near the bank.

Pickthorne Lake: Outdoor Super Store said the water is muddy and low. Bream fishing is slow in 1 to 2 feet of water on crickets fished near the brush piles. The brown trout are being caught on Flatfish, Suspending Rogues and nightcrawlers.

North Fork River: McLellan's Fly Shop said Generation has increased this week, with one to two units running during most of the daylight hours. However, after all of this high water the trout are in very good shape-fat and full of fight. On recent guide trips, we have been catching several fat brook trout just below Norfork Dam. During low water, concentrate your nymph fishing on the faster runs and riffles; tie on a size 16 scud or sow bug and hold on. During high-water, streamer fishing has also been excellent from a boat (especially on overcast days). Best flies have been: McLellan's Hunchback Scud Tan, Olive and Gray (14-16), Flashback Scud Tan, Olive and Gray (12-16), McLellan's Woven Sow Bug (14-16), Graphic Caddis Tan and Olive (14-18), Flashback Pheasant Tail Nymph (16-20), Beadhead Hare's Ear Nymph (14-18), Mercury Brassie (18-20), Rojo Midge (22), Mercury Blood Midge (20-22), Red Jujubee Midge (20-22), Johnny Flash (20-24), Mercury Black Beauty (20-22), Gray Mercury Midge (20-22), Black Wooly Sculpin (4), Articulated Zoo Cougar (4), Swimming Jimmy (4).

Lake level has stayed steady throughout the week 653.59. White bass had a bad spawn this year, but are still very aggressive in the backs of the creeks and main lake pockets with the shad. Early in the morning and on cloudy days look for whites pushing shad to the top. Walleye are still very shallow, holding around do-nothing points and on transition banks. Early morning walleye are reacting to Glass Shad and Shad Raps cast to the banks.
