Last Chance to Order Conservation Trees and Shrubs
AMES - The State Forest Nursery of the Department of Natural Resources will take tree and shrub seedling orders until Friday, June 3. More than 20 species are available including hard to find native hackberry, hazelnut, sugar maple, and red cedar. Select bur oak, pin and white oak along with basswood, river birch, silver maple and sycamore are also in good numbers to create a native forest. To attract wildlife and songbirds, select shrubs including nannyberry, nanking cherry, redoiser dogwood, silky dogwood and serviceberry are available. For winter cover and greenery, Norway spruce, red pine, Scotch pine, white pine and white spruce are also available. Seedlings can be ordered in species units of 100 with a minimum total order of 500. Prices are $0.25 to $0.45 per seedling depending on size and species. Shipping is $3.00 per hundred plants. "Following the recent cool temperatures and state wide rains, now is still an ideal time to plant trees and shrubs," said John Walkowiak, chief of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources forestry bureau. "But you have to act fast to get them ordered and planted before the heat of summer arrives." For more details for to order, call the State Forest Nursery at 800 865-2477.
