Waterfowl Association to Hold Duck Summit
by Lowell Washburn

AMES--The Waterfowl Association of Iowa will host the state's first ever, public waterfowl summit on Saturday, June 4, at the Izaak Walton League Clubhouse in Ames.

The purpose of the summit is to inform duck and goose hunters about issues facing Iowa waterfowl hunters, said Jeremy Rosonke, Waterfowl Association president.

"The wide variety of issues currently facing Iowa waterfowl hunters is virtually endless," said Rosonke. "The purpose of the Iowa Summit is to narrow those issues and focus on solutions. One of our priorities will focus on the current flyover problem. We know the ducks are still out there; we see them in the spring. But those same flights seem to skip right over Iowa on their way back south. What we want to do is put our heads together and see if we can come up with solutions."

In order to more accurately define the current problems facing Iowa duck and goose hunters, the Waterfowl Association has assembled a continent-wide Think Tank of wildlife and resource professionals from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Duck Unlimited, and Canada's Delta Waterfowl.

Beginning at 10 a.m., each group will provide information on a wide range of waterfowl topics. At the summit's conclusion, the public will have opportunity to offer comments and questions during a panel discussion.

"What I'm hearing so far sounds pretty good," said Rosonke. "I think we're going to have a pretty good turnout and will hopefully come up with some good ideas and get a handle on what it will take to implement those solutions."
