Anglers Should Try Central Nevada Lake for Trout Fishing

Groves Lake should now provide prime trout fishing while streams in central Nevada are running high and fast this year, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).

Brian Eller, NDOW game warden, said Groves Lake in Kingston Canyon southeast of Austin along State Route 376 was recently stocked with rainbow trout and the water level is high. In addition, the stream above and below the lake has been planted with rainbows.

“The fishing should now be good in both the lake and the stream. The weather has been cool, but it should be a good time to go fishing.”

On the other hand, streams in the central part of the state are experiencing a considerable amount of runoff this spring. The lower portion of Barley Creek in the Monitor Range was stocked two weeks ago. The stocking vehicle could not get to the upper portion of the stream because of a large volume of water flowing across the road.

Eller expressed concerns about the possibility of flooding along Barley Creek because of deep snow pack in the mountains, warm weather and recent rain in the area.

Mosquito Creek in the Monitor Range and Pine Creek in the Toquima Range have not been stocked due to the high runoff. NDOW anticipates stocking them in mid-June.
