Bridge Construction Won't Hamper Summer Fun at Delaware Seashore State Park

Delaware Seashore State Park is gearing up for a busy Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-30, but park staff want to make sure both campers and day use visitors know in advance about changes they can expect due to construction related to the $230 million Indian River Inlet Bridge Project, which includes the new bridge, access roads and park improvements.

Delaware Seashore State Park is gearing up for a busy Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-30, but park staff want to make sure both campers and day use visitors know in advance about changes they can expect due to construction projects related to the new Indian River Inlet Bridge Project.

"We're rolling out the welcome mat for beachcombers, sunbathers, surfers, fishermen, clammers, windsurfers, you name it," said Park Administrator Ken Farrall. "The main thing we need to let people know is that some campgrounds will be closed for the duration of the project and that day use visitors will have to be alert for changes in traffic patterns and drive accordingly."

All day use areas are open, with some limited access around the Inlet. This includes Tower Ocean and Southeast beaches, which have lifeguards and bath houses; Key Box Road, Conquest Road and 3Rs Road, which are primarily surf fishing areas; Tower Bay and New Road, which are popular with windsurfers and clammers.

The park's Indian River Marina is still undergoing its multi-million dollar reconstruction and access may be limited from time to time, however all marina services are open and ready for business. The most visible addition that is coming this year is the new dry stack storage building which will hold approximately 150 boats. Questions about wet and dry slips, head boat and charter services, fish cleaning and sales, boat ramp and other services should be directed to the marina office at 302-227-3071.

The Indian River Lifesaving Station is now open daily for programs and tours. The hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day. The phone number is 302-227-6991.

The Southside New Camp, which has three-point hookup, showers, laundry facilities and ice and soda vending machines, is open with full service until Nov. 30 and limited service year-round. However, campers should be prepared for construction noise and dust.

The north overflow campground and Southside Old Camp will be closed for the next four or five years. They will reopen with improvements, including two-point hook-up, a laundry building and a bathhouse with outside showers on the northside. Improvements to Southside Old Camp will include relocating the county road that now splits the campground in half and the addition of a DART bus stop for use by campers. A new parking area will be built on the south side of the Inlet for day fisherman. Northside day use parking will remain open with 24-hour access.

Campground reservations are required and should be made through the reservation call center at 1-877-987-2757 or on-line at destateparks.com. For information on the Indian River Inlet Bridge project, visit the Department of Transportation website at indianriverinletbridge.com.
