DNR Announces New
State Record For Atlantic Striped Bass
BERLIN
— The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Service
announced a new state record today for striped bass for the Atlantic
Division of the Maryland Sportfishing Tournament. On Monday, May 16,
while fishing in the surf at Assateague State Park, Allen Sklar of
Bishopville caught a 50-inch striped bass weighing in at 52 pounds,
14.4 ounces. The previous record was a 52-inch striped bass weighing
52 pounds, 8 ounces, also caught in the surf at Assateague. State
records for striped bass are determined by weight.
Allen fished for nearly 10 hours in the surf
with only a few skates to show for his efforts, even though anglers
near him were hauling in striped bass. Eventually, he caught his
record breaking fish using a menhaden head for bait. The striped bass
was checked in at AKE Marine in Ocean City.
A list of all official Maryland state fishing
records can be found on DNR Online at
www.dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/fishingreport/record.html.
