PENDLETON - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife
today announced a May 14 Youth Fishing Event at McNary Channel Ponds,
downstream of McNary Dam.The event begins at 9 a.m., and is intended
for kids 12 and under who are learning how to fish. The day is sponsored
by the US Army Corps of Engineers. ODFW will stock 2,000 legal-sized and
250 trophy-sized rainbow trout. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest
fish in age groups of age 6 and under, 7-9, and 10-12.
"This is a great opportunity for the kids to have one of the ponds
all to themselves and get some hands-on coaching," said Umatilla
District Fish Biologist Tim Bailey. "We're stocking trout late this week
to increase the catch rate for participating kids. After the event, the
trout will be available in the pond for both kids and the general public
to catch."
ODFW and US Army Corps of Engineers staff will be on-site Saturday,
from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., to help kids bait hooks and learn to fish. Loaner
fishing equipment and bait are available.
The trout purchase was jointly funded by the Oregon Wildlife Heritage
Foundation and ODFW's Youth Angling Enhancement Program.
