May 9, 2005 DNR News (803) 734-3950 NATIONAL TRAILS DAY EVENT JUNE 4 AT CONGAREE CREEK The Heritage Trust Program of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, along with Leadership Lexington County Class of 2005, will sponsor a National Trails Day event Saturday, June 4 at Congaree Creek Heritage Preserve in Lexington County where volunteers will help with trail maintenance, litter pick- up and footbridge building and repair. Participants at the June 4 National Trails Day event will be treated to lunch provided by Chris Kueny of Sub Station II in Cayce, and some great prizes will be donated by Leadership Lexington County Class of 2005 and S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) South Carolina Wildlife magazine. The 627-acre Congaree Creek Heritage Preserve borders the Congaree River and the City of Cayce in Lexington County. The preserve features a 2.5-mile trail loop and an abundance of wildlife, ponds and hardwood forest. Trail maintenance and footbridge construction will be the object of the National Trails Day event Saturday, June 4 at Congaree Creek. Anyone interested in volunteering should register by calling the Columbia DNR office by June 1 at (803) 734-3893. Participants will meet between 8:30 and 9 a.m. Saturday, June 4 at Congaree Creek Heritage Preserve, and work until 1 p.m. The National Trails Day event day will begin with an introduction to Congaree Creek Heritage Preserve by Brian Long, Cultural Preserve Manager for the Heritage Trust Program. Then volunteers will dig in to the task at hand: trail maintenance and building and repairing footbridges. Over lunch, provided by Chris Kueny of Sub Station II of Cayce, participants will share the morning's experience and conduct a free raffle with some great prizes from Leadership Lexington County Class of 2005, South Carolina Wildlife magazine, and other generous donors. Items to be given away this year include two one-year subscriptions to South Carolina Wildlife magazine, along with gift certificates to local restaurants and outdoor/travel prizes. Volunteers should bring water, long pants, long-sleeved shirt (if you're allergic to poison ivy), boots, work gloves, hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, any personal first aid needs, tools such as loppers and clippers or a garden rake (with your name on them) and a daypack or fanny pack for water. Volunteers will be treated to cold beverages (Gatorade, water), lunch, raffle prizes, good company and beautiful scenery. The American Hiking Society coordinates National Trails Day, and hundreds of events are scheduled nationwide.
