The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is inviting
anglers and other interested members of the public to see firsthand how
biologists conduct
fisheries
population studies.
A demonstration on the use of trap nets will take place at 6 p.m.,
Wednesday, May 18, at Shawnee Lake in
Shawnee State Park, Bedford County. The demonstration will take
place at the boat launch located near the midpoint of the lake off of
Park Road near Picnic Area #2. The event will take place rain or shine.
Commission biologists will also discuss other fish sampling
techniques, show and identify some of the fish caught from the lake, and
answer any questions regarding fisheries management. Fisheries managers
routinely sample waterways to record data on fish population numbers,
composition and health. The information is used to make decisions on
management options like stocking and establishing rules for recreational
fishing, like what size fish anglers may keep and how many.
