Experimental Oyster Dredging Areas in Portersville Bay Closed To All Oystering At 12:00 Noon On Friday, May 13, 2005.

May 11, 2005

The Marine Resources Division, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announces that as of 12:00 Noon on Friday, May 13, 2005, the taking of oysters by any means will be unlawful on the newly established New Reef and Hard Reef in Portersville Bay. The reefs will be closed because biological surveys and landings data indicate that the oyster resources would be best served by closure of the two experimental dredging reefs. Oystering activity on the New Reef and Hard Reef in Portersville Bay has been closely monitored by the Marine Resources biological and enforcement sections and is being closed until biological surveys indicate that the two experimental dredging reefs can be reopened to dredging to assure the maximum utilization of the resource. Those taking oysters are reminded that the two experimental reefs shall be closed to the taking of oysters by any means when closed to dredging. Contact: Major John T. Jenkins 251-861-2882
