HONOLULU— The Department of
Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) announces the start of a four-month
closed summer season for spiny lobsters, slipper lobsters and Kona
crabs, beginning at midnight on May 1, 2005, and ending at midnight,
August 31, 2005.“The reason for the closure is that lobsters and
crabs lay most of their eggs during the summer months. It is important
to keep harvesting practices in balance with the reproductive life
cycles of lobsters and crabs, to ensure a strong population of these
species,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson.
Persons who violate this closure are subject to arrest and fine of up
to $1,000 and/or 30 days in jail, per specimen taken.
In addition, civil penalties may apply, including restitution for all
costs associated with apprehension and prosecution of violators, and
possible forfeiture of all gear, including boat. It is prohibited for
anyone to spear or take lobsters and Kona crabs with eggs at any time.
Anyone witnessing or having knowledge of a violation is asked to call
the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE)
24-hour hotline on O‘ahu at 587-0077. Neighbor islanders can call toll
free by calling the Operator and asking for “Enterprise 5469.”
