Wildlife Workshop At Chico Basin Ranch
Bird banding station provides closeup view of migratory birds.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife, Chico Basin Ranch, The Rocky Mountain
Bird Observatory (RMBO) and The Nature Conservancy will hold free workshop
about wildlife and prairie ecosystems, May 21. Workshop facilitators are
Duke and Janet Phillips.
Chico Basin Ranch is an 83,000-acre working cattle ranch located about 35
miles SE of Colorado Springs. Early risers will have the opportunity to
watch wildlife biologists capture and band migrating birds starting at 6:30
a.m. Other workshop sessions begin at 8 a.m.
Attendees can choose to spend the morning with a spider expert or go on a
wagon tour of the ranch stopping along the way to see the wildlife the ranch
supports including birds, mammals, fish and more. At each stop, experts
will be on hand to help with wildlife identification and answer questions.
The morning will conclude at ranch headquarters with a picnic lunch
(provided) and a tour of the headquarters to learn about the day-to-day
operations of a working cattle ranch.
The day will include learning about ranching practices, visiting different
wildlife habitats, seeing various wildlife species, and learning about the
importance of agriculture to wildlife and you.
The workshop is free and snacks and lunch will be provided. There will also
be activities for children (depending on number in attendance) including
bird banding, nature walks and programs that will educate kids about birds
and the shortgrass ecosystem.
Space is limited so RSVP by May 18. To register or get more information,
contact Seth Gallagher or Tammy VerCauteren with RMBO at 970-482-1707 or
