Lincoln, Nye Reservoirs Now Offer Great Fishing
Nevada anglers who are suffering from cabin fever and want an escape that
offers fine trout fishing should consider heading to any of several
reservoirs in Lincoln and Nye counties, according to the Nevada Department
of Wildlife (NDOW).
“Recent trout plants have made the fishing really good at Wayne E. Kirch
Wildlife Management Area in Nye County and at Eagle Valley and Echo Canyon
reservoirs in Lincoln County,” said Jon Sjoberg, NDOW supervising fisheries
biologist. “The fishing should continue to be good through the spring months
and well into summer because we will continue to do heavy stocking at those
areas.”
NDOW’s most recent plants took place several days ago when rainbow trout
were stocked at Haymeadow Reservoir at Kirch. That lake, along with
Adams-McGill and Cold Springs reservoirs, also on the management area, were
stocked in the fall prior to them becoming covered with ice. The ice came
off the lake several weeks ago and the fishing has been good since then.
The management area is located about 170 miles north of Las Vegas adjacent
to State Route 318.
Eagle Valley Reservoir in Spring Valley State Park and Echo Canyon Reservoir
in Echo
Dam State Park in Lincoln County have been stocked as well. Both lakes are
east of Pioche and can be accessed from State Route 322. The lakes are
approximately 175 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
Rainbow trout will bite on a variety of baits including PowerBait, live
worms, small spinners and flies. Sjoberg said that anglers should use line
that is no larger than 4-pound test and hooks that are size 8 or smaller.
“Besides rainbow trout, anglers will find brown trout in Eagle Valley. This
is the time of year that you have a good chance of catching a large brown
trout at the lake. A large flatfish lure that is trolled or cast at the lake
may produce a really big fish,” said Sjoberg.
Campers are being advised by NDOW that evening temperatures at Kirch, Eagle
Valley and Echo Canyon can be very cold at night during spring. Temperatures
dipping to the 30s or even 20s are to be expected.
Novice anglers who want information about fishing and what equipment to use
at the lakes can contact Ivy Santee, NDOW angler education coordinator, for
advice. She can be reached at NDOW’s Las Vegas office weekdays from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. at (702) 486-5127, ext. 3503.
