A FEW VACANCIES REMAIN FOR BOW CAMP March 31, 2005 A few vacancies remain for women wanting to attend the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) camp April 8 – 10 at Camp Wallwood on Lake Talquin. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission ((FWC) hosts the program, where women who are 18 and older, spend a weekend learning outdoor skills associated with outdoor recreation, fishing and hunting. Houmere is a physicist at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at Tallahassee. Before she began work there in 2000, she taught at Tallahassee Community College. Houmere developed and teaches a handgun shooting curriculum for the BOW courses. “At one time I was scared of firearms but figured I needed to conquer my fear head-on so I joined a gun club. After learning to shoot and then being asked to serve as a BOW instructor, it gave me an opportunity to do something I enjoy,” she said. Whether it’s the handgun handling course Houmere teaches, or one of the 21 other sessions, the ladies attend their chosen topics in a non-competitive, non-intimidating atmosphere. Houmere said almost all ladies who attend a BOW camp say its one of the best things they’ve ever experienced. Camp sessions begin Friday morning (April 8), and end Sunday afternoon. The cost is $175. Session topics are:
