MONTICELLO
- "Let the government do it" just doesn't get the job done with many
wildlife projects.
Partnerships - public agencies, conservation organizations and private
citizens - are joining hands these days to achieve major
accomplishments. And the upcoming Seven Devils event isn't named for the
participants by any means.
Seven Devils Wildlife Management Area in southeast Arkansas near
Monticello has a unique name all right, and it's a popular green-tree
reservoir area with game animals, hunters and fishermen who use it.
With some help in the form of a longer, larger levee, the lowland area
could be much more attractive to wintering ducks especially. That's the
focus of a fundraiser on Thursday, April 7, at the War Eagle boat
manufacturing plant in Monticello. It will begin at 6 p.m. and will be
put on by Ducks Unlimited along with War Eagle. The proceeds will go to
the Seven Devils project.
What is planned at the management area is a major extension of the
existing levee across Cut-Off Creek. The levee will be extended on both
ends, a total of 2,100 feet. This will require clearing of about six
acres of bottomland and moving about 9,000 cubic yards of earth.
Extensive riprap will be put in place, and three gear-operated water
control gates will be installed.
When finished, the project will increase the green-tree reservoir, which
is seasonally flooded, from 600 acres to about 2,000 acres.
The Seven Devils project will carry the name of Kim Ward by action of
the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission at its March meeting in Little
Rock. Ward is chairman of War Eagle Boats and has a long-standing
interest in Seven Devils and the outdoor habitat and activities of
southeast Arkansas. War Eagle has been the official Ducks Unlimited boat
for the past eight years. Ward's son Mike, president of War Eagle, is
coordinating the fund-raising banquet.
The event will be under a tent on the front lawn of War Eagle's
manufacturing facility on Arkansas Highway 35 in the southeast section
of Monticello. Auction items will include a collector's 1929 L.C. Smith
shotgun, Yamaha four-wheeler, several hunts with nationally-known
sportsmen, a NASCAR "experience" and War Eagle boats. The AGFC has also
"donated" a satellite duck - a winning bidder will have his or her name
attached to one of the electronically monitored mallards in an ongoing
research project.
Along with the Monticello chapter of DU, War Eagle and the AGFC, The
Nature Conservancy is a sponsor of the Seven Devils enhancement project.
Tickets to the banquet are $30 a person or $50 for a couple, and several
packages are available for sponsors and corporate participants. Contact
Mike Ward at (870) 364-0000 for more information. |
