National Park Service Awards Highest Natural Resource Honors
 

WASHINGTON, D.C.— The National Park Service (NPS) announced the recipients of the 2004 Director’s Awards for Natural Stewardship for excellence in the field of natural resources on March 15, 2005. These awards recognize achievements in protecting the health of ecosystems in the parks. The recipients of the 2004 awards have developed and strengthened partnerships for the protection of resources.

The 2004 award winners are:

bulletSallie Beavers, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park - Director’s Award for Trish Patterson Student Association Award for Natural Resource Management in a Small Park
bulletJohn D. Varley, Yellowstone National Park - Director’s Award for Natural Resource Management
bulletDr. Daniel B. Fagre, U.S. Geological Survey, Glacier Bay National Park - Director’s Award for Natural Resource Research
bulletTommie Lee, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve - Director’s Award for Superintendent of the Year for Natural Resource Stewardship and;
bulletPaul Hedren, Missouri National Recreational River and Niobrara National Scenic River - Director’s Award for Superintendent of the Year for Natural Resource Stewardship
bulletAbigail B. Miller, Deputy Associate Director, Natural Resource Stewardship and Science - Director’s Award for Professional Excellence in Natural Resources

The awards were presented to the recipients by Associate Director, Natural Resource Stewardship and Science, Dr. Michael Soukup at the George Wright Society Conference held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These NPS employees are recognized nationally as Natural Resource Award recipients for their contributions to preserving the wealth of natural resources in national parks. The Natural Resource Challenge, first funded in FY 2000, will continue to enhance the ability of these and other resource specialists and managers of the National Park Service to protect these valuable resources.
