Sharp-eyed Arkansans asked to report bald eagle nests
HUMPHREY - If you find a bald eagle nest in use in the state, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wants to know.

Karen Rowe, nongame migratory bird biologist, said, "The Commission's regional biologists monitor the success of Arkansas' nesting bald eagle population as a part of the eagle's federal threatened species delisting process.  If eagle nest productivity in the state begins to decline, then we know its time to afford the bald eagle additional protection and management." I
n 2004 Arkansas had 57 nesting territories occupied by bald eagles that fledged 76 young.

Rowe said eagle nests could be distinguished from the numerous red-tailed hawk nests by their size; eagle nests are at least five feet wide by two feet deep. Hawk nests are about two feet wide by one foot deep.

She added, "Please don't hesitate to report a bald eagle nest, and do not assume we already know about it. Keep in mind that reporting eagle nests on private land will not inconvenience landowners; location information for these nests will be kept confidential to protect both the eagles and the landowner from intrusions."

No one should approach a bald eagle nest to avoid disturbing the birds. Observations can be made at a distance with the aid of binoculars. After sighting a nest, call Rowe at (877) 873-4651 or contact her by e-mail at krowe@agfc.state.ar.us. A bald eagle nest data form will be mailed, or you can download the bald eagle site report form at www.agfc.com. The form includes space for notes on nest activities and site location information. Completed forms should be emailed or mailed to Rowe at AGFC Hampton Wildlife Research Center, 31 Halowell Lane, Humphrey, AR 72073.
