Educators to learn to use out-of-doors as the road to better readers

A child’s natural love of the out-of-doors is now being used as a way to help make them better readers. The DNR's Natural Resources Education Center is offering a workshop for elementary educators April 15.

The eight-hour workshop will provide participants with hands-on experiences and research-based information about the use of the out-of-doors to create better readers. Attendees will be:

bulletintroduced to several books that can be used as a "doorway" to better
bulletreading skills;
bulletinteract in panel discussions with experts in the field;
bulletcreate a nature journal; and
bulletdevelop outdoor extensions from selected children's books.

The workshop will be 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 15 at the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historical Site in Rome City, Ind. Registration for the day will begin at 8:30 a.m. Participants will need to bring their own lunch.

Registration prior to the workshop is required and must be received by the DNR before April 1. A $10 fee for the workshop must accompany the registration to guarantee enrollment. Credit cards will be accepted for payment.

For further information about the project or registration materials, visit the DNR's NREC Web site at www.in.gov/dnr/nrec or send an email to NREC@dnr.in.gov or call 317-562-1338.
