Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources
Press Release March 7, 2005 Contact: Lee McClellan (800) 858-1549 Road Washout Postpones Trout Stockings in East Fork, Indian Creek in Menifee County Frankfort, KY, (March 7, 2005) - East Fork of Indian Creek in the Daniel Boone National Forest in Menifee County is a popular trout fishing stream, but visiting it this spring and summer will be a challenge. A road washout closed vehicular access to East Fork of Indian Creek and rainbow trout stockings will be postponed until summer at the earliest. "A big section of Forest Road 9 washed out and the Forest Service doesn't want any vehicles going past it," said Lew Kornman, Northeastern Fishery District Biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR). "The rainbow trout will not be stocked until the road is fixed. They can't get the trout truck past the washout." Forest Service Road 9 is now gated to block any vehicular traffic. The washout is located about one-half mile from the junction of Forest Service Road 9 and KY 613. Visitors to East Fork of Indian Creek must use Forest Service Road 9 to access Forest Service Road 9 B which roughly follows East Fork of Indian Creek. "We hope to have it fixed as soon as possible, but if I had to venture to say it would be mid to late summer before we can get the road repaired," said Lee Breath, acting district ranger for the Stanton district of the Daniel Boone National Forest. "We need a decent dry spell before we can do anything." A total of 3,900 rainbow trout were scheduled for stocking in March, April, May and October in East Fork of Indian Creek. The KDFWR will soon backpack stock 700 brown trout in the headwaters of East Fork of Indian Creek. The brown trout stockings are not announced to the public to allow the fish time to spread out in the stream and protect them from harvest. Those willing to hike may still fish East Fork of Indian Creek. "It is less than a two-mile walk from the gate to the confluence of Indian Creek and East Fork of Indian Creek," Kornman said. "Remember it is catch-and- release season for trout on East Fork of Indian Creek until April 1 and only artificial baits may be used." East Fork of Indian Creek is open under statewide regulations for trout from April 1 to September 30. The daily creel limit is 8 trout of which only 3 may be brown trout. -30- The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) manages, regulates, enforces and promotes responsible use of all fish and wildlife species, their habitats, public wildlife areas and waterways for the benefit of those resources and for public enjoyment. KDFWR, an agency of the Commerce Cabinet, has an economic impact to the state of $4.8 billion annually. For more information on KDFWR, visit our web site at http://fw.ky.gov.
