Benzing Receives Wildlife Steward Award

Frankfort, KY, March 7, 2005 - Ellen Benzing, general counsel to the Commerce Cabinet, was presented a Kentucky Wildlife Steward Award by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) Commission during its March 4 quarterly meeting in Frankfort.

Benzing was honored for her numerous contributions to wildlife management and the welfare of state resources while she served as the KDFWR's liason to the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission for the past four years.

Mrs. Benzing was an attorney for the department who primarily crafted fisheries and wildlife laws for legislative review once the KDFWR Commission recommended various regulations about hunting, fishing and boating to the General Assembly.

In addition to KDFWR Commission members, Deputy Secretary of Commerce Derrick Ramsey and KDFWR Commissioner Tom Bennett were on hand for the presentation.

"On behalf of the citizens of the Commonwealth, we wanted to express our appreciation for Ellen's efforts to improve our regulation development process," said KDFWR Commissioner Tom Bennett.

"Formulating regulations so that they are enforceable and understandable is crucial to being good stewards of our state's fisheries and wildlife resources, and in helping law enforcement provide safety to hunters, anglers and boaters," Bennett said.

"Ellen was an asset to our agency, and we know she will likewise be to the Commerce Cabinet in her new position," concluded Bennett.
