TROUT TO BE STOCKED IN 13 LOCATIONS FOR SPRING FISHING - Tom Keith
Lincoln, Neb. – Anglers anxious to get back on the water after being
cooped-up inside all winter will have their chance to do some trout fishing
in mid-March when the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission stocks 10-12 inch
rainbow trout in 13 eastern and central Nebraska locations.
The locations selected for this years early season trout stockings are:
Bowling Lake in Lincoln; Haworth Park Pond in Bellevue; Pawnee Park East
Pond in Columbus.; Fremont State Recreation Area Lake No. 5; Windmill State
Recreation Area Lake No. 1 near Gibbon; Heartwell Park Pond in Hastings;
Steinhart Park Pond in Nebraska City; ONeill City Lake (Carney Park); the
middle lake at Crystal Springs Lakes in Fairbury; Ta-Ha-Zouka Park Lake in
Norfolk; Suchs lake in Grand Island; Lexington City Park Lake; and Barnett
Park Pond in McCook.
Anglers of all ages, sizes and descriptions enjoy catching trout. Hatchery
fish, such as those being stocked for spring fishing, can be taken on basic
types of fishing equipment ranging from cane poles to fly rods and bite on a
variety of baits such as marshmallows, nightcrawlers, small spinners and
artificial flies.
Trout are coldwater fish that are found year-round only in northwest and
north- central Nebraska. They are usually stocked in several lakes across
the state during the winter months to provide anglers the chance to catch
them through the ice.
State law requires anglers 16-years and older to have a current Nebraska
Fishing Permit and a Nebraska Aquatic Habitat Stamp, except that an Aquatic
Habitat Stamp is not required of those under 18 years, those who possess a
lifetime fishing permit, or those who have a fee-exempt permit. Those
planning to fish at a recreation area will also need a 2005 Nebraska park
entry permit. Permits and stamps are available online at
www.outdoornebraska.org, from any Game and Parks Commission district office,
or any vendor selling permits and licenses.
