PRESCRIBED BURNS SCHEDULED AT NORTHEAST WMAS - Tom Keith
Lincoln, Neb -- The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will conduct
prescribed burns on several northeast Nebraska wildlife management areas
during March, April and May when weather conditions are favorable.
The Commissions primary goal of burning is to enhance grass stands and
curtail the invasion of woody species.
Burning is used to stimulate the growth of grasses and to favor the growth
of certain grass species over others. It promotes the growth of forbs, which
in turn produce more insects - an important food source for upland game bird
chicks. Overall, burning improves the quality of grassland habitat and
production of certain wildlife species.
Prescribed burns will be conducted on the following areas:
Stanton County – Wood Duck WMA, Red Fox WMA
Dixon County -- Powder Creek WMA, Buckskin Hills WMA
Madison County -- Oak Valley WMA
Antelope County - Grove Lake WMA, Red Wing WMA
Platte County – Wilkinson WMA, George Syas WMA
Colfax County – Whitetail WMA.
Nance County – Prairie Wolf WMA, Loup Lands WMA.
Saline County – Divoky Acres WMA.
Seward County – Oak Glen WMA, Twin Lakes WMA.
