WHITE STUFF SLOWS “GREAT WHITE FLEET”
March 1, 2005

The rush hour commute wasn’t the only thing slowed by a late-winter snowfall. The white stuff also put the brakes on one of the traditional harbingers of spring: the first wave of adult trout stockings in anticipation of Opening Day. Road conditions resulted in 18 stockings (web note - other applicable waters have been added to the listing since the original press release) planned for March 1 being postponed for another day.

Each March 1, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission begins trucking fish from state fish hatcheries to publicly accessible trout fishing waters in preparation for trout season, which begins this year at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 16.

The Commission will stock more than 481 tons of adult trout in 848 waterways across the Commonwealth over the next six weeks. (At about 0.44 pounds per fish, that’s more than 2 million trout.) A similar number of stockings will take place during the open trout season. This year, stocking trucks from state fish hatcheries will travel more than 360,000 miles across Pennsylvania highways and rural routes to deliver trout – roughly the distance from the earth to the moon and halfway back.
