New Website Feature Helps Anglers Quickly Find a Place to Fish in Kentucky

Frankfort, KY, (February 28, 2005) - Landing an eight-pound bass on six-pound line or presenting a fly just under an overhanging branch to a good looking trout hide aren't the only challenges in fishing. Sometimes one of the biggest challenges is finding a place to fish.

A new feature on the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources' website at fw.ky.gov helps anglers find places to fish all over Kentucky. Fishermen can search for fishing holes by county, city or type of waterbody, such as a lake or stream. By choosing the city option, a list appears of all the public places to fish in that particular city. The county option displays the public fishing waters all over that county.

One of the most useful options of this new website feature allows the user to find waterbodies with bank access, fishing piers, boat ramps capable of handling larger boats, ramps designed for smaller boats and spots for carry-down access near a given location. This feature is especially useful for the owner of a large bass boat, for example, who wants to fish a small lake, but is concerned the ramp isn't large enough to accommodate his boat. This information is equally handy for the canoeist that wants to float a smaller trout stream in eastern Kentucky, but is unsure if there is any carry-down access for his or her canoe.

Another facet of this new website feature is being able to find waters that hold populations of a particular species. For example, an angler who wants to fish the white bass runs of spring may search for lakes or streams that hold white bass. An angler just getting into crappie fishing may need to learn which waters are best suited for tasty papermouths. Not every water holds every species.

For each lake, river or stream chosen, there are links to maps that show how to get to the waterbody and its fishing forecast. There is even a link to the distribution of a particular species of fish, its life history and a picture of the fish.

Lastly, this new database includes information about fishing waters with handicap accessible fishing piers and bank access.

To access this wealth of fishing news, log on to fw.ky.gov. and click on the "Fishing" tab. Next, click on the "Where to Fish" and then "Find a Place to Fish." It will help you be prepared when warm weather arrives for all kinds of great fishing trips this spring.
