REGION 3 - SPECIAL 2005 SPRING WILD TURKEY HUNTS SCHEDULED AT LAKE MENDOCINO

A series of two junior and six general wild turkey hunts, by permit only, are scheduled to begin March 26, 2005 at Lake Mendocino east of Ukiah. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is providing this hunting opportunity in cooperation with the California Department of Fish and Game. Six hunters will be drawn for each hunt.

Access: Boat-in access is available from the south boat ramp (7 a.m.-sunset) with the only permitted overnight parking at the Coyote Dam lot. Hunters may also launch at the north launch ramp at any time of day if they have already checked in at the USACE Park Office. There is a boat-in camp area within the hunt area. No vehicle or horse-in hunting will be allowed.

The only foot access will be from the Bushay Campground. Hunters may park their vehicle legally on the Inlet Road shoulder and hike into the wildlife area through the Bushay Campground main road. Hunting and camping are strictly prohibited in the Bushay Campground through the duration of the spring turkey hunt.

Check In: All successful applicants must check in at the USACE Park Office, 1160 Lake Mendocino Drive, Ukiah, CA 95482-9404, prior to their hunt. Selected participants for the two junior hunts and the one general hunt on April 9 must check in the Friday preceding their hunt by 4:30 p.m., or from 7:30 a.m.-10 a.m. on the morning of their Saturday hunt. All other general hunters can check in the night before or the day of their hunt between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. For any questions regarding the check-in process, please call the USACE Park Office at (707) 462-7581.

Take Method: Shotgun or air rifles firing pellets and powered by compressed air or gas (0.20-caliber minimum) only.

Junior Hunts: Saturday, March 26 and Saturday, April 2
Youth hunters must possess a junior hunting license and must be accompanied by an adult of at least 18 years old. Two junior hunters may apply together on one application. No more than two hunters may apply on one application. Only the junior/youth hunters may hunt.

General Hunts: March 28 and 30, April 5, 7, 9, and 12.
The general hunts are open to anyone with a California hunting license who have submitted an application and have been drawn.

Drawing: All applications must be received in the Department of Fish and Game Mendocino\Northern Lake County Unit office by Thursday, March 3, 2005 for a drawing to be held on Friday, March 4.

Applications: Applicants may apply for one hunt date only. Submit a standard Postal Service size postcard (one or two hunters per card) with name, mailing address, telephone number, hunting license number, boat registration number (CF) or vessel description if exempt from registration, and the hunting date of choice. Incomplete applications or applications not following these guidelines will be disqualified from the drawing.
