DNR to hold QDM discussion at St. Paul public input meeting (2005-02-22)
A brief presentation on the quality deer management (QDM) proposal for
northwestern Minnesota will be among topics at the Department of Natural
Resources (DNR) wildlife public input meeting in St. Paul on March 1.
Lou Cornicelli, DNR big game program coordinator, said the DNR has received
calls from people who want to participate in the discussion about QDM in
northwestern Minnesota.
Although the callers live in the Twin Cities area, they hunt in the
five-county area of northwestern Minnesota where QDM is under consideration,
but are unable to attend QDM meetings planned up there.
"We would like to be responsive to those folks who hunt in the northwest but
live close to the metro, so we opted to add this to the public input
agenda," Cornicelli said. "Hunters need to be aware that the presentation
will focus on the legislation introduced in northwestern Minnesota. This is
not a statewide QDM discussion."
At the meeting there will be a 20-minute DNR presentation outlining the
issues, followed by an opportunity for the public to give oral comments and
fill out a survey.
The DNR will not propose specific changes during this meeting; rather, they
will present information relative to the survey conducted in October. The
presentation will also include information about deer population response to
different management alternatives.
The public input meeting is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. in the cafeteria of
the DNR building, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul. Northwestern deer hunters
are urged by DNR staff to be present by 7 p.m.
