FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Arizona Game and Fish
Department is asking for the public's help in finding a poacher that killed
a bull elk about 20 miles northwest of Flagstaff on or around Jan. 30.
The elk was shot in Game Management Unit 7 near Highway 180 and Forest
Service Road 523. This area is northwest of the San Francisco Peaks and east
of Maverick Butte. The hindquarters were removed from the animal, and the
rest was left to waste.
"Since not many people are out in the forest during the winter, this case
may be difficult to solve," says Wildlife Manager Velma Holt. "We need help
from the public in catching the poachers; please think back about anything
you might have seen or heard or any conversations you might have had
recently."
The poached animal was a 4x5 bull elk and is considered a loss for the
residents of Arizona and the wildlife resource.
Anyone with information about this poaching can call the department's
Operation Game Thief hotline toll-free at (800) 352-0700. Callers may be
eligible for a reward of up to $500, and all calls can remain confidential
upon request.
