HONOLULU — The Department of
Land and Natural Resources’ (DLNR) State Historic Preservation Division
(SHPD) is seeking public comment to develop criteria that may be used to
select future Island Burial Council members. Information gathered will
help to clarify sections of Chapter 6E-43.5 of the Hawai‘i Revised
Statutes and Section 13-300-22 of the Hawai‘i Administrative Rules.
"In 2004, the Office of the Auditor issued a report stating that DLNR
lacked nomination criteria for regional representative candidates being
considered for burial councils," said Peter Young, DLNR Chairperson.
"The feedback we get from the public will help us formulate clearer
guidelines for this process."
"The meetings are another way we are reaching out to the public to
improve protection of native Hawaiian burials," continued Young. "We
want to increase public participation and foster a diversity of
opinions," he said.
